Jongudmund
When I briefly worked in Caerleon a few years ago I couldn't really believe that the railway run through the centre of the town but there wasn't a station. (The road links aren't great, especially from the west. I'd have found it helpful to get a train.) There clearly had been one once because they still had a Station Road. A very brief Google just now and apparently there were plans to reopen the station and work was scheduled to start in 2016 according to a news story in 2016. But the station wasn't in a list of proposed new stations in South Wales published in 2017. I'm hoping someone on here would have a bit more information. Just to satisfy my curiosity, really. br2975
The Facebook group "Railways in South Wales" may be your saviour. . One member, Michael Macleur (I believe) is local to that area and has posted pictures of the North & West between Maindee and Abergavenny during the early 1960s. . It is a 'closed group' so you would need to apply for membership. . The admin have no scruples, I can be bought. Brian R
John_Miles
I'm not sure about Caerleon but when stations at Magor and Fairoak are discussed, my sources tell me Notwork Rail brings up objections on the grounds of line capacity.
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted May 27, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 27, 2018 I'm not sure about Caerleon but when stations at Magor and Fairoak are discussed, my sources tell me Notwork Rail brings up objections on the grounds of line capacity. Magor is on a section of SWML which frequently loses either the mains or reliefs as electrification work continues; it may be a more likely re-opening once this is all up and running. Caerleon is on the North to West, where I would have thought a bit of spare capacity could be found, but NR and the TOCs may consider Cwmbran adequate as a railhead.
