Halling Models

I am considering getting one of these from Halling and it has been suggested to me that they are not the best of models and definitely not worth the £180 that it will cost. The suggestions are that they are poor runners and the finish isn't particularly good with poor detail.

I am hoping that someone either has experience of this model or Halling in general and you will say that my fears are groundless :)

Hi Iain,

I believe I had acquired an older one of those, several years ago - unless someone else did one?

Unfortunately, I can't remember that much about it but I'm quite sure the one I had was a very acceptable model, the exhaust shrouding(?) on the roof was nicely done, it ran fairly well but it was 'n.g.' and I don't actively model that (nice as this model was, it didn't do it for me) so after a while, I got decent money for it on ebay.

Looking at the current retail price, I can see why - ouch!

That is a lot of money for a relatively small amount of train but if you can afford it and you want it, why not?  Or, trawl through German ebay (ebay.de), maybe?

Cheers,

John.

Is it really the ex Stangl model? I've not heard of that recently since he retired and that was very good. Halling motor bogies are simple but usually run ok but I've not had a HOe one before only HO.

Might be worth searching Youtube and see how they run?

In the absence of any other responses, I'll give you what little I know about the Halling models. Firstly, its very little - I've never owned one!

I have had actual experience of the shorter 4 wheel powered bogies whilst operating a friend's 009 layout at EXPO-NG a few years ago. He had built 4mm tram bodies on them and reckoned they were pretty reliable chassis. They certainly worked reasonably well when I was playing with them on his layout.

As regards the upperworks, I have heard that the range is based on very simple and basic clear plastic bodies, the details beings applied through painting - a bit like the later versions of the old Hornby GWR clerestories. Whether this is true of the Austrian 76cm gauge railcar or not, I don't know - it may be the body is made from moulds originally produced for another manufacturer.

You might be better off contacting the 009 Society or posting a query on the Narrow Gauge On Line Forum.

Hope this helps.

I have a small fleet of Halling HO electric tramcar models. In my opinion they're very good in every respect. The running is quiet, smooth and controllable whether on DC or DCC. The finish is excellent across the board. The older types of cars have bodyshells with clear inserts for the windows and clerestorys, whereas the modern designs such as the Flexitys have a clear shell that's overpainted with the livery and details. But either style gives a very crisp and attractive finish. If the railcar is as good as their trams it'll be worth having.

All the best,

Mark.

Well chaps - I bought if from MiniatureBahn.at and with the postage it cost less than I was expecting, which is a bonus. I have fitted it with a Zimo MX622R decoder - that was a faff as they might have put in a NEM652 socket but they didnt think where the decoder was going to fit! (and then I got it the wrong way round first time :()

However my fears over the qulaity of finsih ir engineering were totally foundless. An excellent model that unfortunately makes some of older ones look rubbish and the sound of the two motors gives an interesting note - but it does run beautifully on the defaults ettings all the way down to 1km/h!!

The only negative is that 12" radius curves are absolutely the tightest it will do, but as that is the design I am lucky :)

Well worth the money.
