Anglicising a Liliput Fireless 0-4-0

So thanks to Ebay, I got my hands on one of these that I planned to use the chassis (backwards) for an industrial 0-4-0T. These are available from UK retailers at around £65 but mine was half that price.

However, it is such a nice model, I decided to attempt to anglicise it to resemble an Andrew Barclay or a Bagnall fireless loco. Messing about with Microsoft Paint gave this "artists" impression. The wheelbase is quite long for an 0-4-0 British fireless loco. The pipework, ladders,domes ect need removing,the cab needs a major rebuild too. The top of the cab door is just high enough for a 4mm figure to fit through.

It should look the part though!

Time for an update. I had an unexpected day off with an eye infection so plenty of modelling time yay! A lack of vision in one eye has limited my ability to undertake detail work Boo!

 

So here's the progress photos. I have removed the directional lighting as I don't like it.  The pipework and 2 domes were removed from the outside of the"boiler". The cab sides were anglicised. The cab rear has had square  windows installed and the "chimney" was removed as it was quite puny compared to British ones and wire/tube replacement was made up.The"boiler has been reduced in length but not by much as the mechanism would show through

And yes,those are drawing pin buffer heads!

Very nice work!

I've also got one of these and am contemplating doing something similar.

Shortening the front footplate gives it a stumpy Bagnall look. Aided by the walscharts valve gear.

And here it is,almost complete.The styling is a combination of Andrew Barclay,Hawthorn and Bagnall.I am pretty pleased with it.The livery is LNER Garter Blue.The red chassis has been retained and the whole ensemble resembles Hawthorn 0-6-0 Fireless "Northmet". New footsteps installed and a Bell on the roof   The logo is for my fictional South Wales Steel Pipe manufacturer.

Just glazing,couplings a handrail along the boiler and a crew and it'll be ready to roll.I do not plan to name this loco.  Just a letter instead of a number. I have no place for it on my layout though!

love the matt paintjob. All the fireless locos I have seen in service had that matt look!

As for not having a place for her!!

That's very characterful, looks properly like a piece of UK industrial kit, not particularly cared for beyond mechanical and safety critical essentials. In addition to the parts to add, must have a shunting pole wedged under a handrail or a similar convenient location.

 I have no place for it on my layout though!

 It doesn't need much room. Just a wall of the plant boiler house on or near the railway boundary - it's there because that was convenient for the rail supply of coal or bunker oil -  and a little track through a suitably arranged 'hole in the wall' to a minimal lean-to roof (in corrugated iron of course!) for the HPHW charging point and discharge drain. These want to be outside for obvious reasons. Then your little fireless can toddle outside for a top up and disappear once more. With a vapour generator below the layout you can fug the locality up too...

I am already pondering a micro layout. It needs to be small enough to hide from my wife though! 4 x1.

That's a very attractive conversion. I've never considered the idea of drawing pin buffers before, but they really do look the part.

The large (24inch) buffers seemed to be common where curves were tight. In this instance, they help to disguise the lower buffer beam of a H0 model.
