The sunbeam is simply a shortened avenger, the doorsd and front ends are actually interchangeable

 

Yep, plus the Sunbeam got an in line version of the old Hillman Imp engine in a it's small engine version, think it was 930cc from memory?

 

 

Wonder if any survive? I see lots of Lotus Sunbeams and 1600 engined ones.

928cc and AFAIK all recycled as below.

 

 

Engines tend to end up in Imps

 

Bad shells scrapped

 

Good shells as 1600s or Lotus rebuilds

 

1300s almost all gone as well, plenty of 1600s from scrap cars to replace them.

 

You do NOT want anything smaller than 1600 in a Sunbeam

I got admonished for starting a thread on Oxford releases even though I cannot find one. The nearest being this so here are a couple of new announcements from Oxford in 00. Not sure of timescales.

 

Mk1 Capri to complement their 1:43 offering and be a little more suitable than the Cararama version at 1:72. Should see prices for the Cararama model drop! Mk1 escort in 2 door to duplicate the discontinued corgi trackside model. Keeping up traditions of not making the more common variant :/

 

Also an Audi Quattro a la life on mars which is no doubt what they have in mind.

 

Second colour variants for the mk1 Range Rover And SD1 Rover that I will welcome and no doubt others.

 

More issues of the stalwart Anglia etc.

 

Need to find the equivalent thread for the modern stuff now...

Apologies, thats why I didn't provide a link, I couldn't find it myself for the same reason but I knew it was there somewhere. If your on Facebook Taff Davies gives an advanced preview the evening before the public announcements on the 'Oxford diecast collectors' group.

I've probably got all the Ford Escorts (and Lima Mk.I Capris) I need, having bought some of the 'paint it yourself' sets from Hornby when they were flogging them off cheap. These have the added bonus of being screw together while the ready painted Trackside ones were riveted. At least one will become a 4 door. Though the Corgi version has rectangular headlights that is a plastic moulded part and can fairly easily be altered so that round headlights can be fitted.

I can sympathise with you.

 

The newly announced Oxford Diecast items for all eras and scales appear on their website.

1/76 items are prefixed 76, 1/148 items are prefixed N, 1/87 items are prefixed 87 and 0 scale items are prefixed 43.

 

 

When I posted the list of new items on the "Oxford Diecast - What's next?" thread under Oxford Rail section, I was just following previous practice. One of vagaries of RMWeb is that things are rather scattered around so it is extremely easy to miss relevant postings!

Was quite long lived as well, they got rebadged as Chrysler and latterly as Talbots when PSA acquired the remnants of the old Rootes/ Chrysler empire.

 

 

Deserved to do better  as it was just as good as the other big four's offering, and in the case of the ill handling Morris Marina/Ital, a bloody site better.

 

Was a lot better than some, a very good car, comfy as well

AFAIR 3 inches in wheelbase shorter.

 

Mine had an Avenger gearbox, engine unknow, was 1600 so could be either.

there were a few knocking about with a 2.0 "Brazilian block " lump as an alternative to the 1600 iirc popular for road rallying

Was the Brazilian engine two litre? I remembered it being popular.

Wasn't it an engine that was designed to run on alcohol?

 

roughly 77mm stroke version

 

1800cc

 

1600cc was 66.7mm stroke, so would really rev

 

90mm bore would give 1700cc (1704cc) on 1600cc block (I was considering it) and 2000cc (1960cc)  on 1800cc block all figures approximate.

 

There was also a BRM 16v head, but to be honest they had it right with the 911 engine

One post above mentioned "Husky" but as a real car. But it reminded me of the Husky range of my youth, the only competitor to Matchbox for some years in the 1960's and maybe early 70's. They produced some outstanding models, if you could overlook the shiny wheel hubs, like the Sunbeam Alpine (which I think I have still got somewhere), and were only available at Woolworths, IIRC. I know they were absorbed by Corgi, as Corgi Junior, but the range lost inertia, and I presume the patterns transferred to Hornby at some point. Many of our most desirable models for the 70's/80's, would have been available if Hornby reproduced them now.

 

I know second hand ones command completely silly prices now.

There's a couple of websites covering Husky here and here. It was a pretty good range with some interesting subjects, surprisingly few duplicated Matchbox. The early version of the DS Safari is a very close size match with Matchbox's DS saloon, both more or less 4mm scale. The earlier models often ended up with broken suspension which was integral with the chromed plastic base. As with Matchbox, scale wasn't constant but to fit the packaging.

The Zephyr 6 estate is spot on 1/76, I placed one alongside the Oxford saloon model and the measurements are identical. Another one that is 1/76 scale is the forward control Landrover.

Thanks Bernard. The second site brings back so many memories. I must have had about twenty of those, cars and lorries mainly. If only I had kept them all........

Yep, and the same goes for 'Minder' which ran from 1979 and is always being repeated. With one of the main characters running a secondhand car sales lot there's always plenty of vehicles to see.
