attachicon.gif43033 & 43133 1110 Pad-Pnz 16-10-88.jpg

Can anyone help with a location for this one? I've recorded it as 43033 and 43133 on the 1110 Paddington to Penzance on October 16th 1988 but I can't remember where it was taken. It must be a diversion as it's on a single line and it's definitely not Cornwall.

Could it be between Exeter and Yeovil Junction, before regaining the GW at Castle Cary?

Here is a cross country example at Stenson Junction in summer 1990.

Enjoying the pictures, especailly those of HST's in Swallow colours. Probably the best colour scheme to adorn the them.

Here's some more Great Western stuff.

Happened to waiting for my train home one evening in 2017 when I managed to get one of the new liveried Great Western HST's with hiccups as it takes off  to Paddington !  :jester:

Seems the young gricers on the platform enjoyed it too !

Being pedantic, the HST has just passed Stenson Junction. There isn't a "Willington Junction" in this area.

Thanks for the pedantry, Peter. I like to have these locations correct.

I had just copied the wording on the slide mount.

Not the best of photos, but I was in a hurry to get both these units in the frame at the same time.

252001 and 253005 at Swindon, on 19th October 1976.

In the distance, behind the signal on the left, can be seen some class 24s waiting to be towed into the works for cutting up.

I've often wondered whether the prototype was still in service when the first production units entered service. Obviously it was.

I'm not sure the prototype was actually on a revenue earning service in that photo, as it is stopped at signals on the through line IIRC. It may have been ECS. I have had a quick look through my notes for late 76/early 77 and I never saw it again (although I might have just missed it).

I am not sure when it ran its last timetabled service on the GWML. I can't find any note of it during the summer of 1976, but at that time I was making an effort to see my last 24s further north, and so my visits to Slough/Reading were not too frequent.

There was a short period when the Cl.252 was in service alongside the first examples of Cl.253s. Can't recall, off the top of my head, when it retired from public use.

From my FB post a few weeks back on the same subject.  Hope it is of interest.  Kevin (Commoner)

From May 1976 the prototype HST had no diagrammed passenger work.  The power cars went to Derby RTC in to be married up with production trailers 42010/11/14/20, Mk3, 12140, Mk 2 13438 with Test Car 6, ADB975290 in preparation for test running to analyse the performance of the P8 tyre profile on the Mk3s.  The test rake returned to the Old Oak Common and was in regular use along the WR main line from the beginning of June to at least mid-August 1976. The WR was short of production sets for the commencement of 125mph service operation from 04/10/76 necessitating the reformation of the prototype in mid-September 1976.  From 04/10/76 it was diagrammed SX 08.00 Padd-Swan/12.00-Padd/16.00-Swan/20.00 Padd, SO 08.45 Padd-BTM/11.30 BTM-Padd/15.00 Padd-Swan/19.00 Swan-Padd. It was finally stood down in November 1976, by which time enough production sets were in hand to cover the diagrammed working. The last observation I have of it in traffic was 2/11/76. The set languished at OOC before briefly moving to S.P.Marsh in early February 1977. The power cars went to Derby Works mid-February 1977 while some of the trailers were stored at Worcester, pending conversion, with the remainder making their way to the RTC.

Thanks Kevin; thought you'd know.

It began public service on the WR on 5th May 1975 with the start of the new timetable. By 1980, some of the trailers, including the TRUK and TRSB, (still in original livery) were stored at St Mary's goods yard in Derby.

Another Worting Junc/Battledown telephoto image.

This time 43065 is the leading power car heading east in Summer 1992. It is still difficult to believe this was over 25 years ago now.

Thanks Robert. I like that photo of the prototype at Reading on 24/6/76. I now understand why I did not see it, despite being there that day. Looking at the shadows, that would appear to be late morning, and I did not appear until late afternoon. Unfortunately I was on a course, and trying to study with temperatures of 35C outside was not easy.

I was glad for a few hours on the station later in the day, in order to cool down somewhat. I didn't see any HSTs that evening, although (O/T, apologies) I did see D1054 and D1065.

At Litchurch Lane, Derby, coupled to a rake of new trailers bound for the ER, is Crainentinny-based SC 43087. Note the upper-case "C" in the number; this contrasted with the APT-P power cars, which had a lower-case "C".

attachicon.gifFile2388.jpg

That's a really interesting shot Peter.  The power car has a rain strip below the windscreen and this mod wasn't fitted from new or at overhaul fleet wide until 1981.  A couple of WR power cars acquired the mod at overhaul, presumably on an experimental basis in the autumn of 1978, these being W43046/48, while W43028 also received it during a collision damage repair in October 1978.  Do you have an accurate date for the shot?  If new, it would be sometime in May 78, or if following overhaul sometime in May/June 1979.

A few more from me, first off - Crewe Works Open Day 1981 and a power car in the fabrication stage

UID rear power car at Sheildmuir passing a down class 90, we were waiting for a Duchess to appear on a southbound railtour, and some photographers were clearly prepared to risk life and limb to get the shot.
