Although, I wish I had recorded that level of info about the formations when I saw the production units in June/July 1976.

It is amazing how one year's potential *nerdiness* becomes vital historical detail 40 years later.

Although HSTs were a fairly regular sight in Derby, what with the RTC where they were designed and developed, the Loco Works where power cars were serviced and Litchurch Lane where all the trailers were built, it wasn't until the start of the winter 1981/82 timetable that any actually called at the station in passenger service.

Here we see the very first HST to call at Derby, on 5th October 1981, with the 07.00 Bristol - Leeds . It arrived 8 minutes early and the welcoming party on platform 1 included Radio Derby, who broadcast the event. Their radio car can be seen on the platform on the right.

attachicon.gifFile2392.jpg

For any number crunchers, the formation was:

43166, W41147, *40001, W42258, W42254, W42266, W42262, W44000, 43165

Note that the power cars and the TRSB didn't carry a W prefix. The * indicates the buffet end of the coach - I used to record such things I'm afraid...…..

I too have always recorded full formations and spent many years trying to gather similar observations from the early days on the WR (76/77/78), to supplement my own, and to get the fullest picture possible of how the WR fleet was formed and utilised.  Probably seems a bonkers pursuit, but early HST working was pretty much neglected by most enthusiasts and the railway press at the time.  If anybody has any observations from that era, I would be interested to see them - I am happy to negotiate payment or make charitable donations in recognition of contributions received.  An earlier appeal on old RMWeb can be found here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=34464. Please PM me if you can help or want me to expand. There is no doubt that detail you recorded Peter is of historical value for modellers and enthusiasts like me.  Thanks for sharing it.

I have big regrets that I did not note the formations now. Mind you, in my spotting circle I had just about been accepted for writing down DMU numbers without being ostracised.

It is amazing how much your peer group pressure (i.e. acting like sheep) results in history minutiae being lost.

Another NE/SW (as we called them in those days) set departs from Derby on 6th February 1982, with the 10.33 Leeds - Paignton.

post-6880-0-40665700-1529613722.jpg

The train is formed 43167, 44065, 42294, 42286, 42298, 42290, 40003, 41159 and 43168 - I didn't note the individual vehicle prefix, if any.

Edit - Though I'd written that formation on the slide, it must be the other way round judging by the roof vents which show the TRSB to be the second trailer

Super shots Trevor.

Here's a pair of power cars working back-to-back passing Peartree station, ex-works from Derby Loco on a test run. The date is 10th February 1982, but I've no idea of their numbers.

At least the exhaust trail brightens-up a pretty rubbish day, weather-wise.

Really enjoying the pictures in this thread. Some of the earlier shots of the HST's are fantatstic!

Here's a few more from me.

EMT's 43064 & 43089 are well away from home as they pass through Foxhills (between Totton & Ashurst New Forest). They're working 1Z43 Sheffield to Swanage "Swanage Samaritan" charity charter - 14.06.2014

post-7258-0-27782900-1529706066_thumb.jpg

Heading for home, 43089 leads 43064 through Bishops Dyke, on the approach to Beaulieu Road station, with the returning "Swanage Samarian". It was running as 1Z44 Swanage to Sheffield - 14.06.2014

post-7258-0-51790300-1529706072_thumb.jpg

No, it's not photoshopped! 43064 was adorned with South West Trains vinyls, as was the adjacent coach for the "Swanage Samaritan" - 14.06.2014

A formation for the modeller! East Coasts' 43317 leads a near rake of EMT liveried but EC branded MK3's, with the buffet being in EC colours. On the rear is 43074 in later Midland Mainline colours. The formation is seen at Doncaster, heading for London on an unknown working  - 08.08.2011

Wearing National Express' "East Coast" livery, 43208 heads a 1E13 Inverness to London Kings Cross service at Doncaster - 18.04.2014

post-7258-0-81665300-1529706097_thumb.jpg

Coasting towards Burton-on-Trent, 43357 & 43303 are seen working the 1V52 Glasgow Central to Paignton Cross Country service - 30.05.2015

post-7258-0-88644900-1529706106_thumb.jpg

The classic "modern" HST shot! Seen at St Philips Marsh depot during the 2016 open day, are power cars from nearly all of the then operators. From front to back there is: 43187; 43048 "T.C.B Miller MBE"; 43300 "Craigentinny"; 43013; 43423 "Valenta 1972 -2010" & 43172 "Harry Patch" - 02.05.2016

Not that many Midland ones so far, so let's redress the balance:

1983, the Master Cutler I think was the only passenger train that passed through Toton:

1985, among the semaphores at Leicester:

2004 at Hope, when Midland Mainline were running between Manchester and St Pancras during the WCML upgrade:

2018 at Tinsley viaduct, the "wrong" side of Meadowhall, when Sunday engineering work meant a diverted Leeds-St Pancras via Rotherham Central and Woodburn Junction:
