Fascinating.  I knew the area had been bombed during WWII but I thought that the only visible reminders left today were the repair marks on the nearby brick viaduct at Inchbraoch (at least that's how my father explained the patches on the brickwork to me when he pointed them out on a visit to Ferryden 40 years ago).

As an aside, one of my father's aunts, whose husband managed the Co-operative store at Ferryden, was walking along the cliffs between Scurdy Ness and Usan one day, and some German bombers flew very low overhead.  She told me that they were so low that you could see the air crews inside the planes quite clearly - in fact she waved at one of the planes (!) and one of the men waved back at her.  Later that day she heard that bombs had been dropped on Rossie Island and that there had been some civilian casualties.  I don't know what year that was, but it was most likely either 1941 or 1942, so there's a chance it could have been the bombing raid referred to in the article.

There is a fascinating book "Luftwaffe Over Scotland: A History of German Air Attacks on Scotland, 1939-45" that I would recommend, it details most of the raids that were carried out, I was amazed to see that Peterhead was raided so many times.

And Fraserburgh. Fairly logical - they were the nearest towns to the Luftwaffe bases in Norway.

I find that there's one odd thing about this thread....

Well I don't know Wolseley or Caley Jim but I do know Luckymucklebackit and would have to agree he is very odd.

Cheers
