I’ve come to the conclusion I really need a small diorama to show off my weathering work, ELJ (my main layout) will be great for this once even just the first board is more or less complete but I’m not going to rush it as I want it to be a good as I can possibly get it. So I need a photo board, not something I wanted to do as I like just concentrating on one project but for the sake of my weathering work it’s a must.

I’ve toyed with a few ideas, country station, stabling point (this grew into a 12’ diorama and will now be phase two of ELJ ) branch line etc but over the last couple of days I finally decided what I want to build. I hate compression and I want whatever I make to be as realistic as possible so I’m going to use a 4’x18” scenic board but this can be extended in the future and model the stops on platform 1 & 2 of Liverpool Lime Street this will also have a centre road which used to stable locos, 08’s and the odd parcel vans it’ll also give me the chance to try and model OHLE. It’s not going to be easy but with only 4’ to play with I’m hoping it won’t take to long once I’ve got all the bits an bobs. Most will think I’m crazy but it will have lots of fine detail and it will allow me to take plenty of photos and short videos of my work. Again it’s something close to my heart as I spent many a happy day here and I’m hoping to create some happy memories.

So after searching the net for photos etc and printing out the Templot I’m nearly good to go, I also bought an old Hornby hydraulic buffer stop for £6 off eBay so if I can modify this I’ll get another 2.

Here’s some pics of the planning stage, although the 20’s are 1980’s this will be based in the mid to late 1960’s, I’ve also been experimenting with foam board to calve the brick work for the platforms.

A bit more calving of the platforms last night and I’ve been working out the area around the buffers and making sure the steps up to the platform from the centre road will fit ok.

I’m going to try and get the first board ordered in the next week or two but the main hold up is trying to get hold of chairs due to the current issues with C&L, I don’t really want to use flexi track as I’m so used to hand built track now.

More updates soon

Quite a productive day today, although I’ve been in work I’ve finally managed to order some chairs so I can hopefully get started very soon, I’ve also had s good conversation with Nick from N Brass Locos regarding which gantry will be best to use for the ohle and tonight I’ve manage a bit more calving of brick work for the platforms.

Slowly getting there ;)

Cheers

You're going to have a lot of cows on the layout if you carry on calving at that rate!

Mike.

Plenty of steak for tea then ;) more calving tonight it’s never ending!!

Cheers

The gantry arrived yesterday from N Brass Locos, excellent service! Then last night as well as carrying on with my weathering work for a client I painted the concrete areas of the first buffer then started adding warning yellow as per the prototype, I’m not to worried how tidy this went on as it was just slapped on the originals anyway.

A busy weekend away from modelling but I did manage a bit more on the buffer, which seen the ‘Keep off the buffers’ added, not an easy task but it was splashed on in real life so I might get away with it ;)

Also the second buffer is on its way and more platform brickwork has been calved so things are progressing steadily.

Last nights efforts, more brickwork calved for the platforms and the main colouring added, really like the way you can have broken bricks etc when using Foamex and rough it up a bit.

I'd like to have a go at that myself Paul - any 'how-to's', tools and methods used? Where do you get the Foamex from?

Looking good anyhow.

Cheers

Thanks mate here’s a link to the Foamex

I’ll be doing a bit more tonight hopefully so I’ll take some pics of each stage as a ‘how to’.

Thanks again

It might be worth looking at the A1-size sheets of foam board from e.g. Hobbycraft. Less joins, much cheaper etc.

Dave

I did think that so had a look at them but Foamex is different from foam board, you can’t calve the foam board so be careful when ordering, you can buy it in other sizes though https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F222208369788

Here’s some photos as promised I took whilst carving the Foamex, I basically measure out the brickwork then use a scribe to make cuts/indents in the Foamex in the size of the bricks, then basically work along the line carving.

Various bricks can be chipped stcto represent wear an tear etc and I’ve added a small section of ‘new bricks’ to this section to represent a bit of repair work.

A did a little bit of work this morning on the first buffer so that’s nearing completion, just a few touches up and a bit of weathering, also I missed the postman on Monday so I’ve just picked up the missed parcel which is the chairs so I’m pretty happy, just need to get the board sorted then Lime Street Station On The Blocks’ can commence.
