ianmacc
Stopped by this outlet this lunch time. For those unfamiliar with the place it carries a lot of unusual items as well as the basics. As is the sad pattern John is shutting the model shop business in the next few weeks (and turning it into a cafe). Still open and having a clearance sale but yet another high street shop closing down. Leaves Monk Bar (great traditional shop worth a visit) in York for model railways now. Edited to say you may need to knock on the door from now on as he’s not opening in the traditional way. Edited June 25, 2018 by ianmacc
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted June 25, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2018 Another cafe, just what York is short of! Mike.
RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted June 25, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2018 I was round past it last April but the shutters were down—even though it should have been open. Thought it had already closed then!
ianmacc
Hi. He sometimes used to nip out to the post office with the mail order stuff. You had to knock on occasion as there’d been issues with the local undesirables (even York has them) gaining entry.
steve1
That's a shame. It hasn't been open all that long. Is he keeping up the mail order side? steve
ianmacc
Yes he is. Was there four years apparently.
fodenway
A great shame that this shop is closing. I only found it by accident earlier this year, and have made several returns since, always managing to find something I needed, (or didn't know that I needed!). John always seemed to have that quirky item or desirable secondhand piece that you'd never see at Monkbar - as good as it is. Good luck and best wishes to John in whatever venture he undertakes.
Ian_M
Walked past this place earlier this week and was surprised to see it was still there. There was a sign to say it was only trading on eBay during the pandemic, but still encouraging!

The cafe never materialised to my knowledge. There’s another model shop (P and S Hobbies) 5 minutes away that is still open.
APOLLO
I bought an Atlas O gauge freight car from them off their ebay shop a couple of weeks ago - no problem and prompt delivery. brit15

steve1
Pity it’s not still an actual shop. The last thing York needs is another cafe. steve
Wheatley
Good to here P&S is back open, I imagine an entertaining and cutting critique of government and YCC policies on lockdown, support for small businesses and the rest will be available along with the usual comprehensive range of materials, sundries and things you didn't know there was even a kit of. Monkbar Models are still going strong too and have been supplying me by mail order throughout. 1
