This month's National Geographic has a piece on a proposed pumped storage scheme in a former coal mine in Germany.  Capacity is stated to be 150 million gallons which I make to be 0.7 million tonnes, but they propose to dig a new tunnel for the underground reservoir rather than using the existing mine workings.  Stated to be expensive, which I guess it would be compared to just linking two convenient lakes.
