Invershin Station, Sutherland

The Sutherland Railway was authorised on 29 June 1865, and the line from Ardgay to Golspie was opened on 13 April 1868. This year our Local History Society is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Lairg Station and have included a model of Invershin Station in our exhibition, as it shares the same anniversary. The Sutherland Railway line was absorbed by the Highland Railway in 1884.

This micro model represents the station during the steam era of the 1940s/1950s. Today the station is just a shell, having been partly destroyed by fire. Locomotives and rolling stock are still being acquired for the model. The layout was planned in AnyRail using Peco Setrack and Flexitrack. There were two sidings at Invershin, but there was only space for one on the model.
This is my first model railway, so am learning from my mistakes, as I go. The board is 600mm x 850mm plywood on a softwood frame. The minimal landscaping was created using traditional card formers and paper mache, various scatter materials and trees using some treated woody material from the garden, polyester fibre and foliage scatter. The main station buildings are scratchbuilt from card and paper textures. The WM hut and the lineside hut are from downloadable kits. The backscene is a temporary Photoshop scene and will be replaced by a commissioned illustration. There are still some additional details to be created for the loading bay, where the last Stationmaster always kept a spare wagon. He ran his coal merchant business from the station and the local post office also operated from there. I am grateful to Stuart Holt, who created a finescale model of Culrain Station, for sharing his research. Corrour and Ben Alder from here on RMWeb have also been my mentors during this first foray into railway modelling.

Thank you Sem. Space available for this model and another based on Lairg Station restricted me to modelling in N gauge. I shall be posting more about the other Lairg one, which is still a work in progress, but I do have a deadline! I must say I am looking forward to modelling in larger scales after this!! I have learnt so much since joining the Forum and enjoying reading more about the history of the Far North Line, as well as appreciating all aspects of railway modelling.

I have the Invershin Station layout back in my workshop - it will be returning to Ferrycroft Visitor Centre in Lairg for the 2019 tourist season. My husband took a few photos through the case with his digital SLR. I am posting this one of the station buildings. The centre gets very hot during the summer months and the buildings have risen slightly from the platform, but will remedy this shortly.

Thanks, Mike! I am working on a larger North Highland Line layout at present, but won’t be posting this as a topic until it is completed!
