The start of a new project, creating a 00 Gauge WW1 Armored Train, featuring a bit of kit bashing and RTR modification. The aim of the project is to build a freelance Armored Train, based on a number of iconic Armored Trains from the First World War (most notably "Zaamurets" a famous WW1 Armored Train that fought it's way across Eurasia) and form a nice side project to my 009 Scale WW1 Trench Railway - Amiens 1918 Tracks & Trenches.

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/123735-ww1-trench-railway-009-exhibition-layout/

The base for the this project will be a 1/72 scale kit of a WW2 Armored Train. The Train itself bares many similarities to "Zaamurets", and with a bit of kit bashing, should be able to make a pretty good representation of the train.

The main focus for the project will be to kit bash two of the four 4-wheel cars into a single bogie car, with double turrets, motorizing the locomotive, as well as back dating the remaining wagons. The plan is to use RTR stock as donor chassis for the cars, as well Armor Plating a RTR locomotive (much like the real thing).

I hope to bring you some step by step progress on the build, as well as an overall video of the build, hopefully in the not to distant future. So to get things started, here's a couple of pictures of the kit that will form the base for this entire project.

Let me know what you think!

The start of the build.

Two rear cars have been assembled and modified to include a crew observation hatch on the turrets. I've also created the larger leading bogie car by splicing two of the cars together. I've also added a number other hatches and observation points to the center of the car.
Next task to to prime the bodies and fit the running chassis underneath.

Leading Car of the WW1 Armored Train Project is now on it's Chassis and Bogies!

The running chassis has been salvaged from a Dapol Stanier 57ft Non-Corridor Coach Kit. The Armored Body fits snugly on chassis, which also just happens to be the perfect length that the original buffer beams and couple (at the rear end that will be closest to the loco) can be used.

Too allow the car to negotiate my 3rd radius curves, I removed the armored skirts, and re-attached them with a more vertical edge (rather than them leaning in). This slight change have given the bogies plenty of room to move freely. On testing, I was surprised to find this slight modification allows the model to negotiate 2nd radius curves!

Gaps in the bodywork have been filled, and some of the etched details have also been added. To cover up the larger gap in the skirt (where the two bodies meet), I reclaimed two etched riveted panels from the parts that would of been used for the locomotive tender (which I don't need for this build), and placed them on each side. I also got around to adding the etch axle box access point too.

Just need to add the weight, and she's ready to paint!

More progress made on the leading Armored Car of the WW1 Armored Train.

Chassis attached, front end details added and painted flat black (I was un-sure on what livery Zaamurets was, so went for Black). A Spare Bachmann Class 47 Snow Plough, with a bit of re-shaping, fits perfectly on the front, just need to add a chain link as some point.

A few more finer details to add at some point, but for now it's time to move onto constructing the two rear cars.

SDJR7F88 - I wondered if you were going to create a separate diorama for this model, then you mentioned making adjustments to the skirts to enable running on 3rd radius track? Really impressed with this and your WW1 trench model. I purchased the open-top WW1 bus kit, with personnel, for a community commemorative WW1 project, but it is still unmade! We have stories of buses being commandeered for the war effort, so hope to combine the model with a small information panel soon.

Many thanks Marlyn! Glad you like the project and the Trench Railway. Having been toying around with the idea of creating another layout for it. Will have to start thinking up some plans ;) Send over some pictures of the bus if you get the chance, would love to see it!

More progress on the WW1 Armored Train, with the first of the two 4-wheel cars now built. The Armored Body sits perfect on top of a Dapol GWR Fruit D Chassis. Like the real Armored, the chassis will feature nothing more than armor plating over the Axle Boxes, as well as a Plough on leading Car. Once the second car is built it will be onto painting!

More progress on the WW1 Armored Train. Second 4 Wheel Armored Car is now complete, and details, such as the Armor Plating on Axle Boxes has also being added to both cars. I've also added a Plough to the leading/rear Car (Again Spare Bachmann Class 47 Snow Ploughs). The models have also receiving their coat of Flat Black.
Must admit, they really do look the part paired up with the Bogie Car. Now onto the Locomotive!

More progress on the WW1 Armoured Train today, with the start of adding the armour plateing to the locomotive. The model chosen for the build is a Piko G7 0-8-0, which is very similar to the design of locomotive used on such trains. The design of the model, with the motor in the tender is perfect for as simple body swap, with the armour played body, provided in the kit.
Here's a few pictures taken during the test fit, showing the locomotive before and after (note; I used the dome as a temporary funnel)... :P
Let me know what you think!

Following my post form yesterday, here some pictures of the progress on the WW1 Armoured Train.

One of my reasons for using the Piko G7 0-8-0 as a donor chassis for the Armour Train Project, was it's simple, yet beautiful design. With the motor in the tender, it will also hopefully provide room for a Sound Decorder too.

The original body is held on by one screw, which is hidden under the dome. The plan was to use this same mount and screw to hold the Armored Body on.

With a little bit of spare plastic, left over from the Armored Car Builds, I created an adapter plate, which was then glued to the inside of the Armor shell. I then drilled a hole in the top to gain access to the screw, so it can be swapped for the original body if need be.

Once test fitted, I temporally added the Armored Dome and Funnel, to get a rough idea of what the complete article will look like. The funnel that came with the kit, didn't suit the earlier design on which I've based the build on, so swapped it for (what I believe to be) a lid from a eye-liner pencil, which just happens to be the right look and size!

Just need to start attaching all the details now!

Let me know what you think!

Hi All, sorry about the lack of updates on the project over the past few weeks, been very busy on the circuit with my 009 WW1 Trench Railway - Amiens 1918.

Some of you may know back in the summer me and a number of friends/family took part in the "Great Model Railway Challenge" for Channel 5, were teams go head to head to build a model railway in just 24 hours! As you may have seen we managed to tie in our interest in the Railways of the First World War, in with our TV Theme subject 'Blackadder', apply named "Go Forth"!

Here's a behind the scenes video filmed during the filming of our heat, hope it's of interest!

Description;

A look Behind the Scenes of our Team (The Railway Video Division) debute on the "The Great Model Railway Challenge", featuring the construction of our "Black Adder" inspired layout, "Go Forth". Joined by fellow YouTubers 82A Studios, Bluebell-Railway Hawks, Northern Soul Express, plus Adrian and my Grandfather, we take a look at our experiences during the filming of Heat 2, where we were tasked with the construction of a layout, based on a 'TV Show' Theme. So stay tuned to see how we get on!
