Black Marlin Posted July 18, 2018 Share Posted July 18, 2018 A quick question for the enlightened: can anyone advise me on colour-matching the dark grey roof of a Bachmann BR Mk1 Pullman? I have a white-roofed version I'd like to repaint to match the rest of my dark-grey-roofed rake. Can anyone tell me where to get a matching colour? Wickham Green Posted July 18, 2018 Share Posted July 18, 2018 Repaint all of them if you want them to match? ........ or accept the fact that they were probably not all exactly alike when in traffic and opt for a 'near enough' match : the model trade, of course, offer assorted ' BR roof greys' for whatever period - and they'd be matt/dull paints rather than shiny Halfords rattle-paint. robertcwp Posted July 19, 2018 Share Posted July 19, 2018 Humbrol matt 67 tank grey is a good colour for coach roofs. A darker grey is Railmatch 310 (check that number) stock roof dark blue/grey, which is intended for blue/grey stock but looks good on maroon too. robertcwp Posted July 20, 2018 Share Posted July 20, 2018 The bigger colour match issue is the massive difference between Bachmann's interpretation of umber and cream and Hornby's. But it was not as great and the other way around, the old cars warmer toned, the new cars slighly 'colder' colours. Shows up more on some transparency film stocks than others, the vagaries of the emulsion's different gamuts coming into play. Readily seen on Agfa, almost completely masked on 'Kodachrome! You can browse the thumbnails of A4s, A3s and A1s - there's a good picture of 60017 with the roofs clear to see. As has already been observed, the flat-sided brake ends are darker. I'm trying to model the TTP in N and had my white roofs sprayed pretty much the same. Love to find some flat-sided BSKs to make up the consist. If not I'd guess there might be kits, either full or just etched sides to fit on a donor (BR mk1 I should think) coach. Dependent on exactly when your TTP is operating, the substitiution BR made when the K type brake ends were withdrawn circa 63/64 was a single maroon BR mk 1 full brake. Not sure what is says about my modelling at the moment, but I've taken to replicating works photos - no need for a fancy background (indeed normally white) and interesting angles. Here is the MetCam works picture of Hadrian Bar (photographed from Keith Parkin's 1991 Mk1 Coaches book - Mods please advise if this is not allowed), and the Bachmann 2005 release of the same car. I've tried to match the viewing angle as closly as possible in terms of end angle (buffer and car corner) and battery box to rail gap, but I think I'm a touch too low, else the lense distortion is producing different effects on a 4mm scale model than the full size coach.
