Whitby Shuttle - why?

Brings more business to NYMR and I suspect Whitby and Grosmont benefit as well. Although not a expert I think its one of the rare occasions where the nature of the line, the attractiveness of the two town either end and the expertise and skill of the preserved railway come together.

Is that the NYMR effectively operating a service train, of sorts? Using steam...?

Yes, and not sure if it's ready yet, but the teak stock is to be used at some point! Teaks on network rail metal - who would have suspected that?

The Sunday shuttle train is an extra service that runs on certain peak days to give an early departure out of Whitby otherwise the first train from Whitby wouldn't be until 11:30.

The NYMR can run at line speed on the EVL providing certain conditions are met (door bolts, staffing levels etc) including 45mph up to Battersby.  They do run at 30mph on the Grosmont to Whitby section if possible (and lets face it 30mph isn't an uncommon speed on preserved railways), but in some places the track is quite rough and they slow down for crew comfort reasons.

The large speed restriction at Ruswarp for the UWCs has now been removed as they have been fitted with miniature warning lights.  The stop at Sleights is so the driver can contact Nunthorpe to ensure there are no abnormal loads etc on the crossing at Ruswarp - the sighting isn't great from the Grosmont side and they are approaching it at speed, whereas from the station side there is a stop board.
