Can I read the digital edition when I am not connected to the internet?

I have looked at the PocketMags "How it works" but it does not deal with this issue.

I am inclined to subscribe to the digital edition but only if I can read it and view the videos etc offline - i.e. download an issue once and read as often as I wish, just like the paper edition and the free DVD

You need an internet connection to view the video content.

Edit, I subscribe and it tells you on the relevant page, the magazine downloads to your device though, and you keep the copies you have paid for if you later cancel your subscription.

Pretty sure it does. Download the example one and test your device.

I don't have a suitable PC at the moment and I don't plan on buying one just for a test

That seems to put the kibosh on this idea.

Which begs the question why you asked the original question?

Confused.

Because I am thinking of buying one and if I could download digital editions of BRM and Railway Modeller it might tip the decision.I don't have space to keep more than about 6 back issues of the paper editions.

Just one important point. The answers given so far are entirely accurate for BRM (and Hornby Mag and Model Rail) because they all use the PocketMags platform. But definitely not for Railway Modeller. That uses a ‘rental’ model that means you must always have an active subscription. Cancel or end your subscription and you lose access to all the digital editions you paid for.

I can download other YouTube videos. Can I download those from BRM?

On to what? Remember the -  "I don't have a suitable PC at the moment"!

I use Linux and I can download YouTube videos with Firefox. I can't sign up for a BRM account using Linux so I would need a Windows PC and I am assuming Firefox on Windows can also download YouTube videos - but if somebody knows different do please let me know.

It would be nice to get official BRM confirmation from Andy.

Thanks for that. I have not investigated RM yet and what you say is very disappointing.

Traction magazine used to run with the same sales model under their old publishers.  Having taken out a digital subscription I naively thought I would have access to the magazines I'd "bought" once I stopped my subscription.  That didn't happen.  An email to Steve Rabone resulted in a "tough, but that's the way it is" style response.

At least now they have the same publisher as BRM and the problem has gone away, although my lost issues are gone forever.

That sounds very odd to me. Linux is an operating system, in the same way Windows is. Neither are directly involved in any web site’s sign up process. That is done by a web browser, and any web browser should (does, in my experience) provide the same functionality. There can be minor display differences from the interaction between (say) Firefox and Linux compared with Firefox and Windows, but nothing that would break sign up functionality.

Regarding the downloading of YouTube videos, I doubt that Andy can help (no offence intended). That is a technical issue you will probably need to talk to YouTube, or perhaps PocketMags, about. But if anyone else says they can do it, then you should also be able to.

Personally I find it invaluable to be able to access the magazines offline, but have never felt a need to do it with the videos.

Not so. You can keep RM content after cancelling a subscription. But it would be very tedious if you want to keep ALL of it.

Click this icon at the bottom of the page:

That downloads and saves the current page as a PDF file on your computer which is yours forever. It's best to view in double-page spread mode, because you then get 2 pages at a time in the PDF.

This method is either:

1. great if you want to keep specific content without having to wade through other stuff to find it later. It's a good idea to rename the PDF file with a meaningful name before you forget. or

2. bordering on the impossible if you want to keep entire magazines. 80 or so clicks per issue, followed by some PDF editing software to assemble it back into a single PDF.

A PDF is much better than simply making a screenshot, because you can zoom in your PDF reader without it going fuzzy.

Martin.

you can save the DVD video from the online version, select the "share" icon in top right hand corner of the youtube player and copy the URL, then paste into

or take at trip to the NYMR - they have loads of back issue DVDs for sale in the Grosmont shed shop. there was a particularly fine one displaying a layout called Fourgig East when I visited last week ;)

That's fine if you just want to look at something in a browser.

But the programs that allow you to download the mags don't work on Linux - unless there has been a very recent change of policy.

A big part of the problem is that neither the BRM or the RM digital edition websites have useful information about what is and is not possible.

That, I assume, is because they don’t provide the digital platform. You need to visit the PocketMags site (for BRM, HM, MR), and/or whatever platform RM use, to answer those questions. I’m pretty sure you can purchase the magazines or subscriptions on PocketMags site as well. (https://pocketmags.com/). I’ve found them very helpful responding to queries in the past.

I was referring to the PocketMags website.

I must say if I was selling my product using some other website I would make sure that my own website had a full explanation of how to access my product.
