Blog- The Fatadder's Modern Workbench - TPO Modelling for 1998

A while back I started work on building a TPO rake, as part of my continued efforts to tidy up old half finished projects I have dug it out to finish off.

Researchfrom when I first started on the project gives details for formations:

Penzance > Bristol

NFA, NSA, NTA, NSA(t), NFA, NBA, NBA

it doesn't specify what the t signifies on the second NSA, but assume it was to do with the large roof pod as it seems to match up with that particular coach).

or

Plymouth > Willesden

NAA, NTA, NSA(t), NSA, NTA, NSA, NTA, NAA

Another alternative formation for the Penzance > Bristol was shown as
NBA NSA NSA (t) NTA NSA NTA NBA

Now from what I can tell it appears that the NUA break stowage vans were used in the place of the NTAs (given that they were redundant as a brake given the use of the NBA at each end). I have seen photos of NUA at Plymouth in this period but they were not listed in any formations.

I think I will probably go with this last formation, given that it will use both my NTA and NUA, plus 3 NSA that I still need to source. Hopefully DC Kits are still making them.

Construction will follow that of my original NTA seen here

The rest will follow the same approach, using the DC Kits sides fitted to a Bachmann mk1 coach. Once my eyes are fixed I will make a start on the NUA.

At the same time I will also be working on the 1947 TPO, it will be interesting to see the two formations side by side. I think putting 4707 on the front of the GWR version would be rather fitting with the 1990s version hauled by a 47/7
