Thinking of dipping a toe into scale 7 but can't find any info on loco wheel availability

I'm thinking of dipping my toe into scale 7. I know I can get wagon/coach wheels  from both slaters and Peartree but I can't find out anything about loco wheels. I presume someone makes them?

There are several routes to S7 driving wheels for steam and diesel locomotives:-

a/ purchase from Masterpiece Models.... if you want wheels that are part of Masterpiece current production;

b/ re-profile Slater's 0-FS wheels... either yourself (tyre profile tool from S7 Stores) or use services advertised in S7 Newsletter;

c/ purchase S7 scale loco and tender wheels from S7 Group Stores, the current range offers 18 prototypes (that includes 3'7" and 3'9" wheels for the popular diesel prototypes).

Talk to either Paul Stokes on the S7 stand at Telford or me... I shall be operating on St. Martin's Wharf.

I will try and pop round to the to the S7 stand if I can got off my own for 5 mins possibly sunday as that is usually pretty dead. I have an idea for a minimum space shunting layout using either GER tram locos and or NER dock tanks.

I bit the bullet at Telford and Joined the Group. I have got 6 locos that can be converted from FS to Scale7 by just swapping the wheels over. Also I have bought two G&SWR loco kits that are designed to be built in scale7.

Marc ,

I have just had this thread pointed out to me.

As you may be aware I model in S7 and have built a considerable number of locos using wheels from a variety of sources. The Barclay pug which was on display at Telford has Slaters wheels thinned down and reprofiled using the form tool from the S7 Group. If you have access to a lathe it’s not that difficult but there are a number of people who will do the work for you, some advertise in the S7 newsletter. S7 axles are available and Slaters will supply them with their wheels if you ask.

There are a lot of myths about S7, mostly spread by folk who have never tried the standard. It is no more difficult than fine standard O and in many cases easier as one doesn’t need to compromise for narrow frames or make cutouts in boilers to accommodate wheels. As you are starting with a simple 0-4-0 with a short wheelbase you could just build it rigid but for better pickup I advise three point suspension with the rear axle rigid and the front one having about 0.5 mm play.

The job of building a S7 layout has become a lot easier as I remembered that I had bought some Waverley point kits about 5 years ago. A double slip, 2xLH and a RH. As ever when something positive happens the the so a negative to go with it. The are all 1:6 crossing angles and don't fit the boards I have.

So they will have to be turned into a 7FS layout and then the real one can be built. In the meantime I can start building stock.
