MarkAustin
I was at TINGS yesterday and purchased an N gauge laser cut kit of one of these beasts.I haven't done more than glance at it, but it seems OK. I model in 2mm, so will need a scale chassis for it. A question I have concerns the brake gear. Early photographs shew a brake on both wheels on one side only, but the only later ones I have are unclear. Did the get brakes on the other side by the late 1920s, and, if so, was it on both wheels, or just one on the RHS as per the open and covered goods wagons? RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted September 10, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2018 I have had a very quick scan through the MRJ article by Martin Goodall on Modelling GWR cattle wagons in 4mm scale, for the W3 he mentions as built one set of brakes on both wheels, when rebuilt it gained a second pair. While I cant see when the rebuilds took place, it does mention 1930s condition so I assume that you will be good with just the one for the 1920s. Oddly enough a 4mm scale W3 (conversion from a larger van) is potentially going to be on my workbench tonight.)

Mark A There is a scrap line photo of 38192 in "A pictorial record of Great Western Wagons". It has brakes on both sides and appears to have them on both wheels on the side that was retrofitted.
