T30RRA
Stuck on how to prime Slaters 7mm wheels. They are steel rims with nylon spokes so surely they have to use plastic AND etch primer on the relevant parts?
Western Star
My approach is to use blackening fluid on the tyres and the axle... then to mask the treads and spray the whole wheelset with Clostermann black etch primer from a rattle can... and finally spray the entire wheel set with Games Workshop Chaos Black. Why two different black paints? The Clostermann is a primer which often dries with a powdery finish. Personal experience is that the GW Paint has a harder finish. There seems to be no downside to using either paint on the nylon parts of the wheel. Edited September 25, 2018 by Western Star
RMweb Gold ROSSPOP Posted September 25, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 25, 2018 (edited) It`s chemical blackening to the wheels....... And Clostermans primer to the chassis for me...... Edited September 25, 2018 by ROSSPOP
T30RRA
So using etch primer on the nylon spokes wouldn't have an adverse effect? Thanks.
RMweb Gold ROSSPOP Posted September 26, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 26, 2018 So using etch primer on the nylon spokes wouldn't have an adverse effect? Thanks. Nope ! Wheels sprayed with a quality grey etch Primer (Teroson... same quality as Closterman) and then airbrushed with Humbrol Black No 85. John

T30RRA
So the reason for my questions is I'm building my first o gauge kit, a DJH class 03 shunter. The chasis is basically finished now. Tonight I countersunk and araldited the crank pins as recommended by Jim Mcgewons helpful how to and also epoxied the balance weights to the wheels. I will sand them down tomorrow where required. Pictures soon.
T30RRA
So I'm not happy with the primer on the counter balance weights but rest of the wheels are fine. Am I able to rub these areas down and overspray them? Or is it a full removal and start again?
RMweb Gold ROSSPOP Posted September 30, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 30, 2018 yes absolutely, use a fine grade abrasive and gently does it ! make sure it has all dried for at least 24 hours first. John
T30RRA
Some photos of the painted chassis and wheels. I'm not sure on the gloss finish but that's how the real thing was? The photos don't do it justice (the finish isnt actually patchy). Edited October 11, 2018 by T30RRA
