Priming and Painting

My approach is to use blackening fluid on the tyres and the axle... then to mask the treads and spray the whole wheelset with Clostermann black etch primer from a rattle can... and finally spray the entire wheel set with Games Workshop Chaos Black.

Why two different black paints? The Clostermann is a primer which often dries with a powdery finish. Personal experience is that the GW Paint has a harder finish.

There seems to be no downside to using either paint on the nylon parts of the wheel.

So using etch primer on the nylon spokes wouldn't have an adverse effect?

Thanks.

Nope !

Wheels sprayed with a quality grey etch Primer (Teroson... same quality as Closterman)

and then airbrushed with Humbrol Black No 85.

So the reason for my questions is I'm building my first o gauge kit, a DJH class 03 shunter. The chasis is basically finished now. Tonight I countersunk and araldited the crank pins as recommended by Jim Mcgewons helpful how to and also epoxied the balance weights to the wheels. I will sand them down tomorrow where required. Pictures soon.

Some photos of the painted chassis and wheels. I'm not sure on the gloss finish but that's how the real thing was? The photos don't do it justice (the finish isnt actually patchy).
