Billington K Class RTR - When?

The Marsh Atlantic is a splendid addition to the RTR stud for modellers of ex-LBSCR metals.

However, its long awaited presence has given weight to a yearning of mine for another numerically small Brighton class that has always been a firm favourite. The K class Mogul.

They were "part of the furniture" at Brighton loco in my earlier years and their (to me) sudden demise in late '62, along with the depot's small allocation of Schools seemed unforgivable. The K's were aesthetically well balanced with a very handsome profile.

So, to expect a RTR version in the not too distant future to rub shoulders with the H2 is wishful thinking is it not?

Edit - correction of typo in title (bloody touchscreens)

Southern modellers have indeed been very fortunate in recent years.

Indeed it was the availability of a Wainwright C class that brought me back to modelling the British scene a few years ago. The seemingly repetitive runs of yore from the manufacturers had appeared to have been broken with a fresh injection of a work-a-day design. For those less skilled in brass and white metal, prayers had been answered.

As for pre-Grouping designs from much further afield, my only regret is being unable to have seen the originals at work in the flesh, as it were, back in the '50s and '60s. Alas, pocket money in those days wouldn't stretch too far, albeit travelling on a Privilege Ticket (Father was a driver).

There is quite an element of risk for manufacturers when producing models which in prototypical terms were numerically very small and rarely strayed from their "patch".

Why does everyone seem to make these wishlisting type posts in the Bachmann thread? Based on past models, SR and its constituents locos are far more likely from Hornby.

P.S. That's not invitation to repost there.

..... like the 'N', the 'C', the 'E4' ............... Oh No !, they were Bachmann ...... who are now introducing a couple of Brighton Atlantic variants the tender of which might be suitable for a 'K' without an awful lot of re-tooling.

That might have been the case previously, but in the last few years Bachmann have well and truly moved into SR territory. Don't forget the amount of Bachmann made Slam Door 3rd rail units which are all envisaged for the Southern Region transition period market as well...

Bachmann, during most of their existence, produced precisely TWO Southern locos, the Lord Nelson and the N, the first of which wasn't available a lot of the time and is now defunct.

Much more recently, they've added the C, E4 and the Atlantic that's currently arriving, plus the USA as a commission. Not exactly breathing down Hornby's neck.

OK, they've done a couple of EMUs (and the Thumper as a commission) but it hardly constitutes a Damascene conversion to the Southern cause and they're of no use to anyone modelling the outer reaches of the South Western. Ditto, the C and E4, though I am having an Atlantic to run on "Specials".

In their defence, as a Southern Region modeller, their Ivatt tanks and BR Standards have been very useful and they also cover a lot of my S&D wants. I have several Ns which have been great and one remaining LN (two others went "off" in the running department and were disposed of). Until the Hornby Maunsells came out, Bachmann Bulleids and Mk1's were my mainstay coaches, too, but overall, I reckon I've never spent more than a fifth of what has gone to Hornby with Bachmann and it wouldn't be that much but for their generally excellent wagons.

Might be worth contacting DJM or rapido to see if you can set up crowd funding with them. I would jump at the chance to get a K class but I can c it being far down to he manufacturers priorities right now.

Big James

The crowdfunding would probably take longer to reach numbers than Bachmann doing the entire thing - which is saying something. Bachmann is a good choice given 3 other LBSCR classes in their range. Ok Dapol has one small tank loco and Rapido will follow with a slightly larger one in 2020.

Alternatively, would be a great choice for CW Works (already did the I3 tank), they would be faster than Bachmann and probably little difference in the price by the time Bachmann had got that far with theirs.

If someone does decide to do it RTR I hope they do their research. The K class were a minefield for detail differences!

If you're prepared to build a kit though instead of wishing your life away I know that South Eastern Finecast are working on the old K's/Nu cast one by fixing some of the errors and giving it a new chassis..

I think you mean OOWorks ? Yes,certainly they are ,if you like,Southern specialists.Their latest being the Drummond D 15 which is a diamond of a model though it has to be hardwired for DCC. They are my likely choice for the K.But it will come at a price I'm afraid.

DJM ? Hardly likely and Rapido have other projects to occupy them,I imagine.

So much this. That will be where my money will be going if they re-release it. We've also got to support the cottage industries.

Whilst they are at it a reissued Remembrance N15X would be nice.  :D

Nice kit the Nucast one was. Still wouldn't mind a RTR one as well.
