JeremyC
I am building one of these in 7mm from a kit. The drawing I have gives the longitudinal positions of the roof ventilators, but not the across positions. From photos it looks as if: The end compartment vents are on the centre line. The compartment ones are off-set over the compartment. The Toilet ones are on the centre line. [which seems surprising as the toilets are side by side] Can anyone tell me if the above is correct and by how much the compartments ones are off-set. 34theletterbetweenB&D
According to the Nick Campling drawings, the vents were off centre line by 1'6". That would roughly centre them over the compartments with corridors one side. (The very nicely executed RTR model from Hornby doesn't offset them to anything like this extent however. Not a reliable reference by any stretch, but Hornby do tend to do their research very well.) Over the loos and end compartments, on centre line, so above the internal partition in the case of the loos. And of course it is 'semi corridor'. I dread to imagine which half of a semi-lavatory the third/second class section would have been given. ;-)
MikeTrice
Please ignore the reference to 1'6" it is incorrect. The offset from the centre line should be 6" and Hornby have it right. All your other statements are correct. Edited December 13, 2018 by MikeTrice

I was initially surprised by your source as it was the Jenkinson/ Campling drawings book I was using. It was only when checking it again after seeing your reply I noticed the information was given in the text beside the drawing. However given Mike Trice's reply I'm glad I didn't spot it and asked. MikeTrice
The GAs show two vents over the toilet. The preserved vehicle on the NYMR has 3:
JeremyC
The Campling drawing shows a round cap in about the same place as the extra vent. Was this the toilet tank filler and could it have been moved elsewhere, maybe to ground level for safety reasons and an extra vent fitted to ventilate the tank? I notice the roof handrails shown on the drawing have also been removed. Edited December 13, 2018 by JeremyC
MikeTrice
Yes, it does look as if a filler was originally there. There were also some filler pipes allowing the tanks to be filled from ground level so it may be the roof filler on the preserved vehicle was felt unnecessary. jwealleans
There are no toilets in that carriage (at least, not when I last used it) so the filler was probably redundant.
