AMJ
The Alaska RailRoad and the NG Whitepass & Yukon are on my bucket list. Have looked at ways to get there but as MP indicated the distances are vast.

railroadbill
Been watching this, entertaining as ever. The scenery is very spectacular. And interesting to see what Anchorage looks like ("Anchored down in Anchorage", great song by Michelle Shocked). As AMJ said above, it would be good to travel on these railroads! 2750Papyrus
Some years ago we combined a trip on the "Rocky Mountaineer" with an Alaskan cruise. Disappointing overall - a freight derailment meant we had to take the bus replacement for the RM and the cruise ship was a cross between Maplins Holiday camp and the Pride of Dover cross channel ferry. However, the Alaskan scenery is spectacular and I did earn the Whitepass and Yukon teeshirt. MP makes Alaska look most attractive but the Indian narrow gauge and some of the South American steam tours are ahead on the list, if I could ever persuade Mrs 2750.
dibber25
Spot the train. Sadly, it seems that the White Pass has become pretty inaccessible as there are few, if any, railfan trips these days. Access is easiest (but most expensive) by cruise ship from Vancouver to Skagway but all you'll get is a quick run up to the Pass (the US /Canada border) and back. I'm not sure if the WPYR still does a timetabled trip from Skagway to Lake Bennett or Carcross. The best way to do these is to fly in to Whitehorse (I flew from Vancouver) then bus from Whitehorse to Fraser and pick up the train into Skagway. Skagway is a very nice little town with a few places to stay.
RMweb Premium Torper Posted January 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 9, 2019 (edited) I watched part 2. There didn't seem to be an awful lot about railways in it with as much space being given to growing of tomatoes and prize cabbages (or so it seemed). I did rather wish however that they'd gone and cleared some snow with that rather fine snow clearing set-up, but 'twas not to be. AMJ
Just looked up on Google maps driving from Achorage to Skagway, there are 2 routes the shortest is 815 miles the alternative is in excess of 1k! Both involve crossing the border into Canada. Interestingly Skagway indicate that you can fly there by Seaplane or to Whitehorse (110 miles away) http://skagway.com/travel/getting-here/ Skyscanner shows that to get to Whitehorse need to fly via Vancouver.
