highpeak
Here's a couple from New England, late 70s/early 80s. The BL2 was repainted in 1980 and subsequently named American Railfan, which was painted in rather large letters underneath the road number and rather detracted from the effect. The locomotive is now on display at the Cole Museum in Bangor, minus its traction motors I think. The custom Budd RDC is one of the cab cars from the New Haven's Roger Williams set, seen in Amtrak days at New Haven. The two cab cars are preserved at the Danbury RR museum. The RS-11 is leading MEC's Rockland job through Cook's Corner, Brunswick to swap it's cars with any traffic dropped at Brunswick by RS-1, the Rigby-Augusta turn. Business was still pretty good on the Rockland branch in the late 70s, a couple of loads of pulpwood supplementing the usual traffic from the cement plant at Thomaston, ME. Business wasn't so good as a GP38 hustled a couple of cars through Wiscasset, past the hulks of the Hesper and Luther B Little, the last four masted schooners in Maine. They were quite a tourist attraction until they deteriorated badly in the 90s (not that they were in great shape in the late 70s, but that's what being stuck in the mud since 1932 will do for you) and had to be removed as they had become a hazard to navigation. They were purchased by a chap who also bought the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington (disclaimer: might not actually go to Waterville or Farmington) with the idea of hauling lumber to Boston and coal back to Wiscasset. Sadly Mr Frank Winter died shortly after buying the ships and his dream never became reality. In 1998 the rotting remains (of the ships, not Mr Winter) were carted off to the Wiscasset dump. highpeak
Belfast & Moosehead Lake 70 tonner sits on the manually operated turntable in Belfast in the Fall of 1978. The road was doing quite well in the late 70s as the poulty business was providing it with enough business to keep afloat. Portland's Rigby yard could be a gloomy place on a late winter afternoon, but SW1s weren't exactly thick on the ground by the early 80s, so off I went. [ BL2s were one of the reasons a visit to the Bangor and Aroostook was always worthwhile. #56 enjoys the sunshine at Northern Maine Jct, just outside Bangor in the late 70s. RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted October 29, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 29, 2009 Unlike the other images in this thread this isn't a good photograph, it really was a snapshot but it made me very happy to see and hear this on a day out in Hew Hampshire (August 2009).
