Just to let you know that Craven Model Centre has moved into larger premises next door to where they were in the courtyard off Skipton High St.

They have expanded their range, but it appears that this has been largely a move to other non railway related items like slot cars etc. The new shop does not seem anywhere near so cramped as the old one, even with the new stuff on board, and they do still have the entire Metcalfe range in stock, even though they are no longer owned by Metcalfe's. They are discounting, and there were some bargains to be seen there - perhaps not as cheap as the box shifters, but certainly a lot of stuff below cost (last visit I got a 4-CEP for £105). Range is mainly OO and N and the RTR is mainly Bachmann and Hornby (and I don't recall seeing any Heljan stuff).

Worth a visit if you're in the area. Combine with a visit to Drake and Macefield butchers for pies to die for - in fact, Skipton is a pie heaven - there's at least three decent pie butchers there.

On my annual hols in Wharfedale a couple of weeks back I called in on this shop - very friendly guy there said he was the new man running the shop. A good selection of railway and other items there, Metcalfe, Hornby and Bachmann in particular. Saw the Bachmann all green warship in the cabinet, very reasonably priced. I'd intended ordering this from elsewhere but as his model ran well on the test track I bought it there, saving postage and a quite a few additional pennies besides. A good sized discount is nice (of course) but my main priority is friendly service you feel you can trust and I feel I can say I'd recommend this guy and his shop to people. Wife and I didn't sample any pies in Skippy; Lizzies fish and chips is more our style when there in holiday mode - and the kids would never forgive us if we returned home without their annual chocolates from Claire Whitaker!!

Used this shop a few times (living about 40 mins away) and always came away with some stock, even just a wagon or two. Was thinking about somewhere to get the new Farish Class 40 where I could see it run first and thought I'd see if they had one in stock as a trip to Skipton would be a nice idea for other Christmas shopping. Unfortunately:

"Due to mounting debt and the inability to obtain stock. Craven Model Centre is ceasing to trade and closing down. I would sincerely like to thank all my customers for their support and company over the last five years. It has been a struggle to survive, but I have met some lovely people along the way, and made some good friends. Thank you." Oct 18th.

Sad news, but over the last couple of years, he had problems with supplies from both Hornby and Bachmann, and there were large gaps in the stock.  He did tell me that his accounts with both main suppliers had been closed due to "disputes", and without the support of the majors, you are well and truly stuffed.  Sorry to see another one bite the dust.
