Thanks Ian. I have now put the diesel gala weekend of 5th-7th on the calendar (as i'm away 23rd on running day) and am determined to make an appearance for that.

Will PM you nearer the time if you and any fellow rmwebbers will be there.

Might finally get to meet up..

Cheers,

Stu.

50004 has now had the standard couplings fitted, and the marker lights painted white. Still currently in pristine condition.

It worked its first train in to Westquay tonight and is booked out on the late Plymouth stopper, in front of 47402 on the Bristol vans.

Think I will keep it in pristine condition for now - easier to make it weathered later if decided rather than rolling it back the other way.

A couple of the usual pics below.

Cheers,

Stu.

Well, couldn't resist. No sooner has number 4 worked its first train its back in the works for painting up. Started tonight with one end red beam, yellow axleboxes and white wheels on the layout display side, with tiny oil splats around the exhausts. Think I'll slow down til tomorrow now.

Cheers,

Stu.

Last week I managed to finish the baseboards for the storage roads and new low relief scenic break - I decided that this will be the end of the branch within the branch terminus, a small 2 line station & goods yard with a single road for a loco holding road, as if it may have needed one in the past.

I managed to complete the isolating wiring for the 8x storage roads as well as the tracklaying.

at least 5 of the storage roads take a loco+5 (max size that fits into the main station), 2 more take loco+4 and the final road will fit loco+3. The "branch" also splits in the scenic break so trains can run either into one of the 3 nearside storage roads, or into the new scenic station.

Unfortunately, with a new scenic area means I will have to at some point perform my favourite tasks of railside painting (not so bad) and ballasting. It may be some time before the scenic section is anything other than additional storage roads.

I have attached some pics of the new storage section, plus a few extra running pics.

I like the scenery on this layout, nicely toned and believable.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well not much more work done in the last 2 weeks, but have started a running session or two.

Tried to take some pictures from slightly different angles , although failed and ended up taking the usual shots.

47402 Gateshead on 1M24 08:23 Westquay - Manchester Piccadilly about to enter the tunnel by the sea.

A view from down the yard

45103 waiting to take 1E44 09:47 Westquay - Newcastle, next to 50004 on 1A28 10:28 Westquay - Paddington

50004 departing for Paddington

Thanks,

Stu

Oh, and a couple of weeks ago I think control might have fixed this image what with all the "additional" Friday night services that were in Westquay that night.

Somehow think the diagrammer may have been a vac man.

Stu.

Continuing the timetable as I'm not in the mood for ballasting branch #2, there are still 2 DMU diagrams and only 1 DMU in service.

Hence today DMU diagram #1 rather surprisingly has loco & stock as cover, working up & back in turns between 33004 and 50010. This means sea wall mileage for some.

50010 waits the road on the sea wall on the 09:49 St.Judes - Westquay DMU replacement - Load 2 downgraded 1st class !

Suitably unimpressed holidaymaker plus a backwards bellowing guard in the vicinity.

Cheers,

Stu.

  • 1 month later...

37697 has arrived at Westquay. Lima unused secondhand purchased from Alton on Sunday before Day 3 of the Gala. This is actually the first model 37 I have ever owned !

Runs quite well but will need some running in and a little light lube . Originally was going to renumber to one of the Laira/St.Blazey 3767x but may leave as 697 working down from Cardiff.

And also had an affection for 697 as had it for haulage 3 times up and back to Princes Risborough at Aylesbury Open Day 1987 (Before they let 20053 out on the final run).

Haven't done any painting, weathering or detailing yet, but as soon as I do images will follow.

Also had a bit of a clean up in the garage tonight so I can actually get to the layout again.

Cheers,

Stu.

Have been busy yesterday and last night on the branch in a branch terminus.

Have ballasted the track , fitted some card hardstanding (kept it slightly thinner than normal as I still have older loco's that could chew it up if its too tight to the rail inside), and done a little more scenics. Have tried a cheapo print some brick paper inside the tunnel solution but not sure about this yet as due to the curve and gradient I haven't made that bit easy.

And to cap it all photo's don't take so well on that side of the garage.

Have attached a couple of low quality shots of 56079 on a test run into the stone depot. Still a work in progress this side as I will need to weather the track, fit signal and possible box, trackside gumf and a small hillside.

Cheers,

Stu.

Hi Stu

Like the BR Large Logo era... great on the cl50's to, they all look the biz bud...

The 50010 photo by the wall with man on the bench, looks an excellent photo, you seem to have a few Large Logo 50's, I have 2 NSE livery and BR Blue and still yet to get me a Large Largo in the class 50, you have made me want one after looking at yours mate.

Thanks Jamie.

I always preferred Large Logo on a 50 to any other livery, even better with Black roof and red beams in my opinion, but standard grey roof just as nice really.

I've got 5 large logo versions (Hornby 50004/11/20 , Lima 50010/13) - and Lima 50044 in Old NSE.

And I'm hoping to find funds for another in the next few months.

Cheers,

Stu.

This evening I have been weathering track, using my tried and tested (!?) method of grey/brown acrylic paint mixed to a sludge, trying to make it darker near to black where loco's may idle.

Waiting for it to dry before reporting the results. Had to clean the rails a few times already though. Just hope the point blades stand up to a good clean tomorrow.

Also need to paint those black plastic buffer stops into a colour more in keeping with a rustic West Country outpost.

Well, couldn't wait until tomorrow. So 50011 was commissioned to run light engine on the newly weathered track on test.

Running OK with 11, may need to run something more ragged over this track tomorrow to highlight any problems.

Took a few photo's of 11 waiting the road to St.Judes by the sea wall, then on the blocks on the stone depot line, before retiring to the hardstanding of the depot for the evening.

Cheers,

Stu.

Today I have mostly been modelling rather than onlooking.

This has involved further items being added to the stone depot and some painting of buffer stops and weathering 37697.

After a good service and trimming of gears and lube, 37697 is running a lot smoother now.

The stone depot has been constructed meticulously, using my favoured method of "start cutting up some card and plastic and stick it together to see if it looks right". So any purists best look away now :O

Have attached some pics of todays work showing:-

Added walls and conveyor to the stone depot.

37697 Before & After (have to thin the paint dabbed on the lights I think)

And a rather serene Westquay with 33004 on a small van train with the resident 08 parked up in platform 3.

Thanks,

Stu.

More work today which has included more card work on the stone depot. I cut many pieces to size and spent some time scoring them to make a plank/corrugated style texture as well as added some printed brick and a few doors from card. Not technically correct but they may look OK when painted.

Also painted the hard standing grey, done some more track foliage, painted the buffer stops and added a security fence behind the buffer stops.

And also started repainting the yellow fronts on 47628 as the lima ones are far too much the wrong yellow.

A couple of pics looking at some of todays work without any loco's !

Cheers,

Stu.

Thanks Jamie. I only have the one 33, and even though apparently the roof is incorrect I still like the look of it. It was the first "next generation" loco I bought after returning to modelling so its still a bit of a favourite. I would really like a 33/1 in BR Blue as well. And a 4TC..

Cheers,

Stu

I have finished painting and weathering my scratchbuilt stone depot. Not really sure about the outcome, but it fills the gap nicely given all this side of the layout was not planned in any way . Getting bored of looking at the 56 on Yeoman wagons sitting in the depot, so tonight 45103 is working a 16T train into the depot for a photo opportunity (I mean "Test Train") - even though light is still poor that side.

Cheers,

Stu.
