brian daniels
Here are a few pictures of the new Heljan 7mm Deltic for you to cast your eyes over. This is a pre production sample so there might be some issues still to sort out.
RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 Looks nice. No doubt someone will pull it apart but to me, it looks like a Deltic
CUTLER2579
Posted Today, 12:23 Looks nice. No doubt someone will pull it apart but to me, it looks like a Deltic I endorse that comment as well Garry and at the end of the day thats all that really matters to me and I am sure you. I will certainly be putting my money where my mouth is and buying a couple (Ballymoss & St Paddy) in BR Green. I am more than happy with my 37 & 47's.Really good value for money. Well Done Heljan. RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 Its very tempting now I have seen it. But my next consideration is the 7mm Class 26. I have a 20, but not allowed to touch or see it until my Birthday in a few months time How did you manage to get the this test model onto home turf Brian, you must move in very exclusive circles
Rugd1022
Nice one Brian, you lucky, lucky man The fifth photo down taken at that low angle says 'East Coast thoroughbred' to me straight away. Can't wait to see one with paint on.... the more I look at it the more I can see a mucky pre-tops blue one resting on my work bench! I like the way it sits down on those bogies... RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 Who's going to be the first to suggest how good it would be if they also downscaled a version to 4mm. Ooops, looks like it was me Pity the Deltics did not get used on small freight runs, or did they? I have no room for a full 12 coach rake for behind one of these beasts. Dan Griffin
i have always thought one day there would be a o gauge loco that's swing me into o gauge, this may just be it. that looks awesome!
bluex5
Pity the Deltics did not get used on small freight runs, or did they? I have no room for a full 12 coach rake for behind one of these beasts. There's probably a prototype for everything but they were pretty much dedicated to the KX - Edinburgh express passenger trains untill about 1978. I have a pic of a blue one (pre TOPS) on a van train somewhere - very strange sight! As a deltic nut I'm pretty impressed with Heljan's effort so far - as has been previously said the way it sits on the bogies is very convincing, which for me is the worst aspect of Bachmann's 4mm effort. Green / SYP racehorse for my display case, thanking you.
RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 Looks nice. No doubt someone will pull it apart only to fit a sound chip
34theletterbetweenB&D
... Pity the Deltics did not get used on small freight runs, or did they? I have no room for a full 12 coach rake for behind one of these beasts. Model KX 'Bottom Shed' then? Lots of solo Deltic shuffles in and out of there. Who's going to be the first to suggest how good it would be if they also downscaled a version to 4mm. ... ... I like the way it sits down on those bogies... ... the way it sits on the bogies is very convincing, which for me is the worst aspect of Bachmann's 4mm effort. ... Yes but. O gauge types know full well that such a monster with wheel tops inside body work is going to need near scale curve radius to run: they will not be so foolish as to think it will operate over the O gauge equivalent to OO set-track point radius. A few minutes simple work on the Bachmann chassis will deliver a scale gap between bogie frame top and bodywork lower edge. Which restricts the much better looking result to a 30 inch minimum radius or thereabouts, unless you are prepared to have the tops of the end wheelsets cut their way through the bodysides. This is an inescapable feature of the prototype design. The alternate bodge to over large seperation is to reduce the wheel diameter; that doesn't look any good either, the major defect of the Bachmann DP1 model, and actually a lot more trouble to correct. This problem will afflict any manufacturer's attempt; unless they are brave enough to issue it with a 'minimum radius of 30"/600mm required' stipulation.
Allegheny1600
Brilliant pictures, Brian! Much better than my rather snatched ones at Telford! I bet you'll be sad to give the Deltic back to Mr Heljan? All i can say now is; . . Bye bye, 00 gauge! . . Cheers, John E.
RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 There's probably a prototype for everything but they were pretty much dedicated to the KX - Edinburgh express passenger trains untill about 1978. I have a pic of a blue one (pre TOPS) on a van train somewhere - very strange sight! Mmm, I would be going for green so out for freight pretty much, maybe it will just have to run light only to fit a sound chip Now there's a thought, how good would that sound with decent size speakers in there. Model KX 'Bottom Shed' then? Lots of solo Deltic shuffles in and out of there. Whoah there, lots? Just the one for me unless I win the lottery lol. brian daniels
For those that want to fit speakers there is a place for one in the tank but you may get more in there and there is a nice big space either side of the curcuit board/DCC chip in the middle. As my local model shop is also the Heljan UK rep he knows I have a layout to phot and run the 7mm products for him. Unfortunatly he asked me to paint this blue as I have it in bits and we can't wait to see it painted. So watch this space There is a pic in a book of a green Deltic on a 4 wheel van train somewhere as they were tried on fitted freights.
34theletterbetweenB&D
They were indeed quite early trialled on freight, but by this time BR was beginning to be run as a business, and it did not take long for the accountants to realise that they ate most of the profit in freight service. The only justification for this expensive to obtain and maintain unit, was for the delivery of a high speed passenger service; for which premium rates could be charged and which with high utilisation earned enough dosh to make them pay their way. (It was this cost accounting that led to the class 37, even the DE type 4s cost too much for many freight hauls, and using 2 class 2s was also expensive, the EE3 proving 'just right' in this respect.) ... Whoah there, lots? Just the one for me unless I win the lottery. ... Lots of movements; and since you get a one side only view, a different name and number combo each side means that for a small additonal expenditure, 'two' can be obtained for not much more than one. jonathan452
Pity the Deltics did not get used on small freight runs, or did they? I have no room for a full 12 coach rake for behind one of these beasts. I remember being on a Deltic + 6 on a Sunday afternoon York semi fast with 55004 circa 1980. (4 x Mk2d TSO, Mk2d FO, BG). Reaching over sixty well before the top of Holloway but unfortunately followed with a engineering diversion over the Hertford loop. But there is your prototypical inspiration for a shorter formation. D6975
Don't forget that they were used on Liverpool-Newcastle services in later days. 8 coaches or less. The first photo is a caption competition surely. - That's one hell of a key ring you've got there Bert.
two tone green
Stunning. Thanks Brian. I enjoyed looking at it in the flesh at the show and now seeing your excellent photos have reinforced my desire to order a few when the time arrives. Soon it seems from a chat with the Tower Models people.
two tone green
Sorry Brian, forgot to ask. What is it like for a twin smoke installation, any room to see that V shaped smoke exhaust added to the sound install. Thanks TTG
brian daniels
I will take a more general shot of the body and chassis apart tomorrow so you can see the room in it. It has to be the lightest Heljan loco to date. Like the "keyring" caption

Hugh Flynn
hi well i have been waiting to see shots of this and i have to say i am very pleased well done Heljan saving up for either a 20 or another 37 for a future project. hope its out early next year fancy a blue one ST PADDY 55001. two tone green
Thanks Brian. Will watch out for them. The 47 was heavy, the 37 I have just got seems a tad lighter even when the smaller size is taken into consideration so the continued downwards trend for the Deltic does make sense in some ways. But would have expected it to top the 47 due to size. Possibly cost reduction exercise, keep the punters happy. Ching ching, can I order a few now please to go with my ever increasing number of Mk1's.
AMJ
You could always use the excuse that Doncaster has put one on the stopper from Donny to Leeds to test an ex works loco. There are many photos of big engines on that run in numerous books.
Philip Jackson
Pity the Deltics did not get used on small freight runs, or did they? I have no room for a full 12 coach rake for behind one of these beasts. Towards the end of their days they could be found on short parcels trains, perhaps just 1 - 3 parcels coaches. RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted September 7, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2010 Towards the end of their days they could be found on short parcels trains, perhaps just 1 - 3 parcels coaches. Thanks for that. Was thinking of a green one, would they maybe have been involved in parcels? Perhaps I am thinking about it too much, if I like it, I'll run it with what I have lol.
