Waverley Route Stations

Can anyone help with a trackplan of St Boswells in the 1950s up to closure in 1969. This is a station on the Waverley line which looks a good potential modelling location, with it's shed and bay platform.

Many thanks in advance.

The National Archives of Scotland http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ also have some plans and drawings of the station, you can either order on line or look at the drawings in the office then order the ones you want.

If you can get to Edinburgh, it is now permitted to photograph original documents with your own camera, free of charge, in the West Search Room, Charlotte Square. You're not allowed to use a tripod or flash, which does create difficulties, as the ambient light is poor, but it is a useful way of aquiring research data; you can, of course, take as many shots as you like.

As 26power suggests, some info is on the Waverley route thread.

A link in a post by 'Chard dated last week will lead towards a trackplan of St Boswells North.

Ah thanks Jamie, a little 'Da Vinci Code' does the job.

I was hoping to confirm the presence of a turntable, and the number and configuration of sidings. These are missing from the signalling diagram.

Those look very useful. Do you know if I can request these electronically? It looks like ordering by mail and a postal delivery are possible, but will be difficult given the weather. Fat chance of me getting up North this year!

Many thanks Duncan,

No reference that I could see in Model Railway Constructor Special No. 7 - Model Drawings Reference Book.  Published in 1985.

NBR Study Group would be worth investigating:  http://www.nbrstudygroup.co.uk/

Cheers, 26power

There was an article (including track plan) of St Boswells in one of the model magazines in the late 60's/early 70's. Think it may have been Model Railway News/Model Railways. It was part of a series on the Waverley Route in The Borders.

Someone may recall the exact issue.

Dave, try the 'Old Maps' site that I linked to in a post above. There's a 1:2500 map of St. Boswells in 1963 on there which shows a turntable to the east of the engine shed, and is also detailed enough to let you count sidings.

Hi Dave,

Not sure is the honest answer the best bet would be to contact them and ask the question. Here is a link to the charges page http://www.nas.gov.uk/documents/FeesAndCharges.pdf .

Was there a photo in the Areofilms book of the station?

Kind regards

A bit later than you think--it was 'Practical Model Railways' in the 1980s, but I can't remember the exact issue offhand. I *do* remember that it was a very large and complex plan.

More bits for you to look at if you have not already found them are some images of the engine shed http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=284071

I have just found the reference to the article which is:

Evans, D (1985) 'St Boswells', Practical Model Railways, vol.August 1985

Page(s): 30-33

Stow and Belses apparently were in the June eddition

I'm sure someone will have a copy of it somewhere.

Kind regards

...stretch

...yawn....

You called?

It's sure to be in the Middleton Press Hawick - Edinburgh volume later this year, as an OS repro. But if you can't wait for that, the Maps section of the library will have or be able to order the appropriate vintage and at a decent scale for you.

Has anyone mentioned the RCAHMS resource yet? (EDIT: yes, I see you have)

Also, doesn't 'The District Controller's View - Waverley Route' feature a schematic diagram?

In fairness this precise data is on my Waverley to-do list, as one of the holes in this particular Swiss cheese.* The oil terminal (still there, look on Google street view) and cattle pens amongst other common-carrier merchandise, plus the branches, all combine to make this location eminently modellable in traffic terms.

* Q: what are the holes in your Swiss cheese?

A: someone else's Swiss cheese.

When responding i clean forgot to suggest you have a look at these two links. The first is a gallery of images taken after closure

http://dwb.railsteamgallery.fotopic.net/c754979_1.html

The second is a track plan on the same gallery

http://dwb.railsteamgallery.fotopic.net/p22527062.html

Hope they help

Thanks everyone for your guidance. Managed to get a copy of this with the trackplan and a four page spread. Very informative, and it looks like I can fit it in my garage in N guage with only a little foreshortening.

Thanks to you all again.

I've been studying the trackplan of Boswells (both 1921 and ~1960) an have noticed tha the Kelso branch bay track seems to re-join the mainline. Where did the branch split from the mainline?

At Kelso Jct, which is 1/3 of a mile or so South of the station towards Charlesfield, and pictured here:

http://www.railbrit....te.php?id=29882

which is all rather wonderful, and its modern day legacy can be seen on Google satellite, immediately to the south of a rectangular field that lies south and west of the B6398 as it enters NSB from the south.

Plenty of others linked here:

Many of which are culled from here:

Just somewhere to park this link to Hassendean Station's own website:

Hi Dave and All

Have been following this forum on St Boswells

I liveed in StBoswells the village and travelled to school

in Hawick every day by train 1951 1953

I cycled to Newtown approx 1.5 miles where the station was

and thence to Hawick and then walked another mile oe so to

Hawick High School summer and winter no buses or easy door to door

transport those days but oh the engine manes Wandering Willie

Bougal Dalgetty The Talisman to name but a few unfortunatly I did not

own a camera but can still remember going to the Station or near the junction for the

Kelso line to Trainspot looking foreward to seeing the layout

Here's a first stab at the track in code 55. Work yet to do on getting the running lines parallel and tweeking the angle of sidings. This is from the 1921 map, even more sidings in 1960. Although I'm planning to run stock from 1958-1964 period I think this is enough track and I'll a little modellers license.

The squares are 6" so you can see it's 15' in length and 2.5' deep. I have a length of 18' to play with, so I think I'm going to have to accentuate the mainline curve to get me turning without having to put a really tight curve. The up end tracks will run straight into the hidden section of the layout, the Carlisle end will have to execute a fairly sharp turrn. I'm planning to model Kelso junction and then have a 15' straight run to the other hidden section. The fiddle yards will dumbells, both 19" radius loops which will take a 12 coach train and loco.

What do you reckon?

Forgot to mention the turntable, or lack of. The Peco one is way too large, so I think options are:

Omit the turntable (don't fancy that)

Scratch build a static one - does anyone know the dimensions or have a photo with something I can scale from?

Scratch build one, and find a genius to motorise it.

On another note I belive cattle were deliverd to the auction by rail and road. By the 1960s I think the market behind the station and A68 was gone.Does anyone know if all cattle left the market alive in cattle trucks, or if there were butchering facilities at the auction and more mundane vans were involved?

Cheers

Dave
