Bachmann 9F "Evening Star"

Some maroon mk1s to recreate the "Pines Express" along the Somerset and Dorset. I understand Evening Star was a regular on this route.

The S&D specialists will know more but since 92220 was allocated to the line for some time, I presume it didn't just work the Pines Express and probably hauled Green Mk1s, Bullieds and even Maunsells, plus LMS Period stock too, at some point.

Indeed, I have a picture (in book by Welch IIRC) of 92220 stopped at Henstridge with just three Bulleids and a van on a local.

921220 "Evening Star" arrived on the S&DJR in August 1962 (replacing another 9F which was returned to its "home" shed - was it 92210?) It pulled mostly expresses including Pines Express. After the last Pines in September 1962 it was returned whence it came. However in 1963 (cannot remember exactly when - I am away from home again and away from sources) it came back to the S&DJR as emergency cover (for some failed Standard 5s) together with 92224 and ended up pottering with 3-coach trains for a time since the through expresses had been diverted as the Western Region purused its aim of closing the S&D. Hopefully others on here can fill in more details for you.

A suggestion,Rob----A35 WR headcode,'Red Dragon' title above and a rake of Bachmann Mark 1 in chocolate &cream. A real head-turner! No need to weather, then. It is prototypycally accurate,by the way.It happened.

Now that looks to me to be a damn nice idea! I have the Mk1s already... I'll buy or print or photoshop the headcode and headboard. In due course.

That will require a little weathering... the tunnels you know.. DVD and Youtube movie clips of those days show quite a few other carriages besides Mk1s, as well... notably in passing Radstock, 92220 iin one clip with such as Spamcans, Std Class 5s and Fowler 7Fs all on the dame day.

Has anyone else seen this?

It looks like it is on top of the lining, possibly some black over spray?

Might try a rubbing compound, see if you can buff it out. Of course then you will end up with a shiny patch. Light weathering and a matte overspray...

Might be easier to return it.

And Gresleys - at least 1 directly behind the tender on the last Up Pines Express. Commonly in use as strenghening vehicles for extra traffic in sets all over the country around this time as also on Cambrian.

Cheers

... However, I noticed this on the tender which is, surprisingly, more obvious in the flesh than in the photo...

If it will not simply brush off, then the obvious recourse is return to dealer if you want it 'perfect'.

Looks to me that a fitter was working on the strum box (I believe that's the right term, it housed a sieve to stop pond life in the tender tank finding its' way into the injectors) and deposited a whole lot of muck and dirt on the tender side. Some accidental fortuitous realism would be my attitude to such a thing; show me a steam loco working in BR service that didn't have some crud somewhere, even after the most careful cleaning...

Well I'm pleased to say the first of two 'Evening Star's I bought while price was so good has arrived here in NZ., apparently straight and undamaged, it looks from every side to be absolutely marvellous and great value... shame to paint it or do m y version of weathering it.

On the same day I received Hornby B17 'Thorpe Hall', equally stunning, so I am having a nice Christmas! Sorry that there was damage to your model Alastair, I hope you can organise an exchange from Kernows, I think they are pretty good people.

Here is the Bachmann's recent 'Evening Star' doing a 1961-62 Somerset and Dorset turn...

Front carriage is a BR Thompson non-corridor composite, what a trip from Newcastle that would have been for the 3rd class passenger, and the others resemble Hornby Staniers from Leeds, Sheffield or Manchester....they probably all rode as well as BR Mk1s ?...and that must be a soon-to-close or already out-of-use colliery branch or siding on the right, a lot of license used in this picture.

Lovely model... lovely engine.

I've just got one of these....what a wonderful model. I do wish Hornby had a super-detail version available of this loco but alas they don't.

Now can someone explain what that piece of small plastic under the cab (LH side) is, where the arrow is pointing to in the picture below? It seems to be able to move around a bit. What does it represent? I notice it's only on the LH side, not the RH side.

It represents the battery box for the Automatic Train Control equipment as fitted at Swindon works to those 9Fs allocated to the Western Region. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_train_control#GWR_ATC

Edit: Added Wikilink.

Thanks for that! Should there be much 'play' in the thing? When I took the model out of the box I noticed it is slightly angled away from the cab towards the main chassis as per the Hattons photo. This is how it appears in many of  the photos of this model, but also I've seen pics of the Bachmann model where it is resting perpendicular to the bottom of the cab (as per the pic below). It can be moved around back and forth on my model.

It should be perpendicular (although the real thing is hard to see at York becuase of the stairs up to the cab) and should be as reigd as any plastic part guled in to metal - i.e. 0.5mm play. a dab of glue should firm it up. Do bear in mind it is held on by a small plastic lug so can be vulnerable (see QC thread where someone reported it had fallen off in the box)

Latest Bachmann Even Star is here.

Once again no attempt to capture her in the later form with large front footstep (third batch with earlier type).

Worringly however, the tender lining looks rather 'off' - it is a fraction too high and the top of the lining is impinging onto the curved top of the tender. The bottom of the lining has a rather large gap between it and the lower edge of the tank. Sorry to be counting rivets, but previous releases had the bottom rivet running through the black on the bottom lining. On this batch, the rivet goes through the lower orange line, so a good half mm out.

Someone at Kader was not paying attention when setting up the tampo machines....

See Rails pic of latest release here:

Glad I got the 2011 release. Still kicking myself that I didn't get the original 2006 release which had a slightly better shade of green... oh well.

Still the yawning gap between loco and tender.  I guess loco to tender doors are beyond Bachmann though I can't find a picture of a 9F in motion with the doors open
