RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted March 28, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2011 We had Widnes at Ally Pally all weekend, we had locos with old and new (mostly, granted) decoders and we were in the main hall (if that matters) but we didn't have a single problem caused by the transmitters, not a one, a few caused by operators but nothing attributable to the pesky radio waves. We were running several iPhone and Android throttles via a wireless router to DCC with no issues at all apart from the odd fumble finger. Some of the decoders (mine) date from the mid 90s. DesA Hi DesA, Digitrax DCC, with SE8C signal controllers, BDL168 track occupancy devices, switchit and switch8 point decoders, a track bus and a point bus under the layout, and a TCP/IP network for the MILF to use, decoders are about 70% loksound, 29% Lenz (some very old) and 1% "others". I have seen the layout a few times and it has always behaved very well when I have been around! Just out of interest, what would happen if the layout next door turned up with an identical DCC wireless kit (including similar loco/point codes)? A small chance perhaps but the more people do wireless DCC the more likely it is to happen. I once saw somebody flying radio control aircraft having an awful time because somebody nearby was using the same frequency. I haven't seen it happen on a model railway but could it? Just like my friend who has a wireless doorbell, which keeps ringing because something nearby sets it off. Apparently his doorbell push has been known to unlock a car parked outside on the road! The world is gradually filling up with wireless this and wireless that and I do wonder if the air will gradually carry that many waves that at some point they will clash and cause problems. I am going on my A level physics from 30 plus years ago but I recall studying what happens when waves combine and they can do very strange things! Phew - you missed the time one of the operators kicked the point power off then, kept us "amused" for a short while wondering why. We, initially at least, didn't think one of our esteemed operators would do such a thing Just out of interest, what would happen if the layout next door turned up with an identical DCC wireless kit (including similar loco/point codes)? A small chance perhaps but the more people do wireless DCC the more likely it is to happen.
