Jim Martin
Good idea to post this. Like you, I got fed up with rummaging through my collection whenever I wanted to look something up, so I recently did the same as you. Feel free to add these into your list for completeness: 106 ECML Expresses (1958-2003 loco-hauled) 120 Fertiliser trains (not 121) 166 West of England passenger trains (this is in the main magazine, NOT the modelling supplement; it's part of the article on Tiverton Jn. in 1975) 171 Steel coil (domestic) Also, you have 175 as "157" for the Plasmor. I have REx going back to issue 99, and your list is complete back as far as that, with the additions above. I think that they ran similar features as part of the main magazine before REx Modeller was introduced. I seem to recall reading references to articles on cement trains and automotive trains, which I've always assumed were in the same style. Maybe someone with access to earlier issues can provide that info and we'll be on the way to a definitive list. Jim

Padishar Creel
From me also thanks to Ants for the list, like Jim I too would search for hours only to get led astray by other articles and in the end I would forget what I had been looking for! Dungrange
who is it that produces the pictures of the locos that REx use for the little formation pictures? I would definately like to know. The 'software' would be very useful indeed! I think that the artist that you are refering to is Simon Glancey and his work is available for purchase on his website http://www.wwrgallery.co.uk. If you look at the bottom of this old Rail Express webpage (http://railexpressmodeller.wordpress.com/2008/06/15/class-375-update/), you will see the reference. I agree that a CD with lots of images which would allow users to create their own formations would be nice. Regards David

Jim Martin
Hiya I did the initial dozen or so - they were done in illustrator. HTH Jim Do you have some sort of "library" of rolling stock profiles that you developed over time and stitched together as required? Also (and this is something that I've often wondered about the REx articles), in the case of trains shown in mixed liveries - e.g. sectorisation era trains with a mix of blue & grey, sector liveries etc. - do the liveries reflect the actual train, or did you use a "plausible mix" of appropriate colour schemes? Jim
Guest jim s-w
I did yes, the liveries were always the ones requested and were based on actual trains. Cheers Jim

Alan76
I wonder if Rail Express might consider pulling all these together in a book? It would be a really handy reference work for anyone wanting to model accurate train formations. Alan

Matt
I was told last year at Warley that REX were indeed doing a bookazine of their train formations to be available through WHSmith in fist half 2012 though I have not heard anything since. Source was REX staff on their stand so I believe credible.

Fat Controller
Just found this thread and the proposed book sounds very interesting - does anyone know if this book was ever produced? I haven't seen anything from Rail Express; however David Ratcliffe, who has done a lot of work for them, had published 'Freight-Train Formations', which is very good. It doesn't have the little drawings but it does have about 40+ formations of various types, drawn from TOPS and other sources, and lots of photos. The period is from the mid-1970s onwards.
