Hi,

If you expecting to read something about the railway that painted its locos blue, sorry, this is for those interested in the Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway - another victim of Beeching - which ran just 18.5 miles from Alderbury Junction on the Salisbury - Southampton line to West Moors on the Brockenhurst - Wimborne line.

Please keep posting in this thread and we might be able to build up a useful interest resource for other enthusiasts of the S&DJR

To kick off the group, here is a list of information sources:

The Southern Way Issue 12 B&W - Photos

Impermanent Ways, Vol1 Hampshire Jeffery Gayner - Colour photos

Railway Magazine August 1961 Article Lines out of Salisbury

Railway Bylines Vol10 Issue 10 Sept 2005 Article - History, maps and photos

Dorset Steam Michael Welch - Colour photos

Branchlines Around Wimborne - Vic Mitchell Middleton Press - History, maps and photos

The Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway Nigel Bray Kestrel Publications - History, maps and photos

Fordingbridge RMweb topic

I hope that we can add to this thread

A few pages each in:

Hampshire Railways Remembered, Kevin Robertson & Leslie Oppitz

Southern Branch Lines, Michae Welch.

I've also had photo album type books out of the library that have featured it; one's on my desk at work, the other went back. i can't remember the authors as the "names" files in my brain database don't work very well anymore! Apparently it's a sign of overload rather than Alzheimer's, I hope. Both had titles including "Steam", "Dorset" & "Hampshire" if that helps!

Also remember that members of the South Western Circle can borrow portfollios which have both documents, some plans and photos.

South Western Circle portfollio- The Sailisbury and Dorset

South Western Circle portfollio - Castlemans Corkscrew - has some photos of West Moors

Modelling Railways Illustrated ---- plan of the footbridge at West Moors

HMRS Vol issue plans of Breamore

HMRS Vol issue a waiting shelter for Verwood by Mick Hutson

Steam Days March 2000 The Fordingbridge Line

I will check and insert when i find the copies.

Indeed they have theu have a couple of nice rare views of the back of the station. From it you can clearly see how the postbox was moved from the platofrm to the rear of the building.

We should also remember the article in British Railways Illustrated on a days spotting at Broadstone. It contains details of all the trains spotted and some usefull photos.

Tim are you ok if we add photos into this stream as well?

The late Chris Gammell's "Southern Branch Lines 1955-1965" (OPC 1976) has some items of interest.

Plates 115 and 116 show West Moors on 7.7.1962.

Plate 117 shows a train leaving Downton 6.7.1962.

Plate 118 shows Daggons Road on the same day.

Plate 119 has Verwood with a U Class approaching the next day.

Plate 120 has Daggons Road again, also on the 7.7.1962, with a U Class and train leaving.

Rather then loose this thread in the old Group archive section this has now been moved here into the Southern Railway Group which hopefully will also make it more obvious that its not one of the other S&D's as at least one of them has its own Group now!

Does anyone know if Downton Tunnel is still about or has it been filled in?

The filled it in along with the cutting as well. Shame really. :(

A couple of years ago before I really knew about the line i found the old railway bridge that was just before the north cutting. It didn't dawn on me at first that there was a tunnel they filled so much in.

Does anybody know how the filled it in. Surely if we were to get a digger out (not saying we do) you'd be able to find the tunnel brickwork.

Somewhere there must be some information about it.

I'm not to sure. The tunnel was only 107yds long (97.8m) and from what i've read of it, it was unpleasant for crew due to it being a small bore tunnel (and perhaps no ventilation?).

I may go and have a wander over the fields that way and see if i can spot anything. The problem is I'm not sure where the cutting ended and the tunnel began.

Maybe possibly look at the old maps website and get a grid reffrence then look at the ordance survey for an up to date map and have a look

I believe this might be the site of the tunnel?

Google Maps Downton Tunnel Link

It appears the infilled cutting is to the top right.

Ian i have looked there but i dont think it would of been a tunnel there more of a cutting but now its just plowed feilds as google shows i thought it might of been near this old bridge nearer Alderbury

To the left, south of this bridge. If you look carefully at this view you can see the scars on the landscape of the filled in cuttings.

And on this map if you zoom in to the larger scale, you can see the contours of the cuttings before they were filled in.

Cheers,

Dave.

The thing to remember is that the tunnel will almost always look as if the landscape hasn't been specifically changed for it, whether the tunnel is currently operational or not. In the section of line your link points to, there is clear line route visible both north and south, even in the white patch to the north where the cutting has been filled in. In the view I posted, the section where the tunnel is, though short, is devoid of lineside boundaries. Of course, today it's relatively difficult to tell where such things are on the ground.

Now I'm in the position to be able to create my own slice of chosen railway in a new purpose built shed I can create my dream layout based upon my local line - the Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway. I know quite a few members on RMweb know a lot about this line and I hope this topic can be used to bring some of this knowledge together. I know there was the S&DJR forum as an extension of RMweb, but if I am honest I am not quite sure what happened to it!

I have borrowed a copy of the S&DJR by Nigel Bray which has been an incredible source of information with some brilliant photos of which I haven't seen before. It also brought up an interesting feature I did not know existed before. This being the Skew Arch bridge at Burgate. I had assumed there was a level crossing rather than a bridge as it is fairly level. I have not come across any photos of this bridge and would be interested to know any more information about it.

Hi Each

I have arranged for Jam's newly posted topic (post above) to be merged into this exisiting topic about the proper S&DJR of the three that existed!

:sungum:

proper S&DJR  ;)

Also, which is the third, presuming that the first two are the Somerset and Dorset Joint and the Salisbury and Dorset Junction?
