RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2011 I was in Banbury on Wednesday 27 April and on completion of my visit I decided to spend some time photographing, I chose Bishop's Itchington as my location as I've been there before and it's quiet, no-one else passed me in the time I was there ( 7 hours total) I also managed to photograph a fellow RMWebber B) As I arrived an empty car train was heading North but not a bad day all in all. (Passenger trains not identified yet) 168218 heads South 220028 heads North 220033 heads South 168002 66158 on 4M66, 09:32, Southampton Western Docks - Birch Coppice intermodal 220006 heading North A nice "Brucie Bonus" 43062, John Armitt, and 43013 66622 on 6M22, 11:56, Q, Westbury Virtual Quarry - Stud Farm empty ballast boxes and passing the other way soon after 66506, Crewe Regeneration, on 6Z98, 12:57, Q, Daw Mill Colliery - Didcot Power Station loaded HHAs 66155 on 6Z27, 11:56, Q, Stud Farm - Hinksey Virtual Quarry loaded ballast boxes 66136 on 6E55, 13:35, MWFO, Theale - Lindsey Oil Refinery empty bogie tanks almost "potted" 66516 on 4O09, 10:17, Trafford Park - Southampton Maritime freightliner 220001 and 220013 head North 165024 heads South A signal problem at Leamington was causing some delays .. 220033 heads North as 221128 heads South Another "chub" - I like these ! 165008 heads South 66213 on 4O26, 12:18, Trafford Park - Southampton Western Docks intermodal 220017 was following on the heels of the above, riding the yellows. And a well known forum member was following behind the Voyager, having made up time after a late departure from Birmingham Big Jim at the controls. Chasing Jim down to Aynho was 66571 on 4O17, 15:44, Lawley Street - Southampton Maritime freightliner (168218 approaching) Nice to get another Didcot coal as these will end when Didcot gets decommissioned 66082 on 6M53, 15:24, Q, Didcot Power Station - Daw Mill Colliery empty HTAs It gets a bit "shadowy" as the afternoon passes but the location is so peaceful I stuck with it, I'm not a "trains are more fun in the sun" type photographer anyway Followed "on the block" by 66570 on 4M86, , Felixstowe North - Lawley Street freightliner Then a mixed emotion, sad because it's no longer W&S but at least the train lives on 82305 and 67013, Dyfrbont Pontcysyllte, on 1R47, 16:33, London Marylebone - Birmingham Moor Street - ex WSR stock 66541 on 4M68, 14:52, Southampton Maritime - Birch Coppice freightliner 168216 heads South A UID 221 heads North, I missed the number 66589 on 4O55, 12:15, MX, Q, Leeds FLT - Southampton Maritime freightliner A nice double header ! 66006 and 66173 on 6M28, 18:16, Hinksey Virtual Quarry - Bescot Virtual Quarry empty infrastructure I wanted to photograph the 70 on the Trafford Park, but due to problems around Southampton it was running an hour late, but I persisted (Shutter speed down to 1/60s ) Rewarded by this .. 66551 on 4V11, 17:00, TX, Q, Washwood Heath - Taunton Fairwater Yard departmental (sleepers) And this 66575 on 4O29, 15:18, Trafford Park - Southampton Maritime freightliner and this, the closer shots are poor as the shutter speed was now 1/30s but still quite a pleasing result considering 66104 on 4E70, 16:10, Southampton Western Docks - Wakefield Europort intermodal And finally ... 70001, Powerhaul, on 4M99, 16:57, Southampton - Trafford Park freightliner (+60) That's all folks ! B) (Well technically I have a lot more Voyager and unit shots but have only posted a sample so you stay awake ) This post has been promoted to an article
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2011 Thanks for reminding us what a busy railway this former-GWR main line still is. As for photography when the sun's not out - much better detail is often available in flat lighting, compared with contrasty sun-and-shadow. Very nice pics! 37114
I used to like using the bridge up at Kings Sutton for photting the odd Tractor hauled tour, was amazed in one hour how many trains and in particular loco hauled trains passed while I was there. Good choice of location, don't forget as well Banbury has a reasonable model shop (Trinders), with a decent selection of Model railway stock.
owentherail
Wow, did not know coal still goes to Didcot from that direction, good pics, looks busy!! owen
RMweb Gold Trevellan Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2011 Some terrific shots there Dave. I hope you didn't suffer any ill effects from the change in latitude (or is is it longitude?)!
Glorious NSE
Nice pics - interesting to note the FL workings that are now solid rakes of 60' flats with high-cubes where before they had pockets and lowliners mixed in. Progress in motion. B)
RMweb Gold big jim Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2011 nice pics, thats the first piccie ive seen with me driving a chiltern train, somewhat shorter than my old trains!! as your caption says made up time after leaving birmingham (by not stopping at 5 stations) only for the signaller to put an intermodal out in front of me at fenny compton so i had to crawl to banbury, got to london 12 late in the end from 35 late ex brum
caradoc
Excellent photos, thanks for sharing them. The Oxford/Birmingham route is as busy now, if not busier, than it has ever been; When I started spotting at Oxford in the early 70s, the passenger service north of Banbury was roughly 1 per hour, now there are two Cross-Country services every hour plus Chiltern Trains. Freight looks buoyant as well; Like Owentherail, I hadn't realised that Didcot PS still received coal from the traditional sources in the Midlands. Back in the 70s, Toton 47/3s, plus the occasional Tinsley loco on trains from the Barrow Hill area, were a familiar sight on the MGR trains, before the 56s took over. It all went downhill when the 58s appeared....They weren't even blue !
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2011 Wow, did not know coal still goes to Didcot from that direction, good pics, looks busy!! owen Not very common judging by what I usually see at Didcot and west thereof but it could possibly be for blending (or it might just have been some at a bargain price). St. Simon
168002 And a well known forum member was following behind the Voyager, having made up time after a late departure from Birmingham Big Jim at the controls. Hi, Some very nice pictures there Dave, never knew there was so much freight! But you manged to photo 2 of the units that I worked on during my work experience at Aylesbury! One of which our very own Big Jim was driving (No. 168109), Jim, if anything happened on your journey on that unit, it wasn't me, honest! But anyway, nice to see some of "my" units still working! Dave, you putting these photos up has made me realised that even though I live within a couple of miles of the Chiltern Mainline, I have never once been over and photographed some of the workings, might do some over the summer! RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 3, 2011 Hi Dave, Nice set of pics - did you manage to get the formation of the NMT? Interested in the 2nd vehicle in without NR branding or blue stripes. The "spare" 977995 used to have a light grey roof, no stripes and small (compared to the rest of the NMT) "Network Rail" logos to identify it. Just realised it can't be 995 as it's an ex-catering vehicle. The 2nd coach in looks like a TGS - 977994? Edit - also realised that both power cars have had the stripes and logos/legends removed from the bodysides. Maybe I need to redo my NMT....... Cheers, Mick

RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 3, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 3, 2011 Ta! I also like the variation in yellow, which makes me think that NR bodyside yellow is on the way out and warning panel yellow is the incoming shade. Although there is a clear step in shade on the front of the PC......... Mick
