Rammstein2609 Posted May 16, 2011 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Hi all, I've never had the confidence to enter a modelling competition before but recently have been pleased and surprised with my own results. I thought I may as well give it a go this time. My Plan is to build a simple area which depicts a secure Nuclear Flask unloading facility with a track plan roughly based on the facility at Dungeness. I have already built 2mm Finescale turnouts so the single B6 on the plan won't be a challenge. I have set a few personal challenges for myself for this diorama: Design and produce an etched 'kit' for a suitable gantry crane Design and produce an etched 'kit' for a portacabin Build suitable lighting units for the small scale Add as much detail as possible And actually finish it! I plan on using a Graham Farish DRS class 57 and a Class 37 resprayed into DRS by myself as the motive power with the plan to also try and convert two class 20's into DRS Spec. Hopefully the Grafar FNA flask wagon will be released in time but if not I will have to build a few TPM kits. If my attempt at suitable lighting works I plan on setting the diorama at night for added interest. DCC will be employed to allow loco lights. Below is the simple track plan and two 3D renderings of the baseboard made from 3.6mm ply. The board is an awkward shape but this is to ensure it fits perfectly within the specified footprint. I don't think I will have time to produce an entry myself as I need to get Rannoch completed but I do have a couple of TPM flask kits all built and painted that you can use to photograph on it when its complete to save you having to build some! I have taken some measurements for you: Total length over buffers: - 84mm Main Body/Chassis - 77mm Flask Hood base length - from ends of support brackets - 29mm Flask Hood top - 23mm x 17.5mm Not sure of flask dimensions but they are available as I have seen leaflets from visiting sellafield when I was younger. I have also been to Barrow Docks open days in the past but the flasks here are different used for the shipments to and from Japan on the BNFL Fisher Boats. Rammstein2609 Posted May 27, 2011 Author Share Posted May 27, 2011 Hi, A little progress so far. I have built the baseboard and painted the exterior to look a bit more presentable. The next step is to start on the trackwork. I already have all the components for the concrete flat bottom track and the wooden bullhead point. I purchased a new lenz Set 100, a Graham Farish DRS class 57 and a TCS 4 function decoder for the 57. The class 57 is currently sitting in the DHL depot so will be picked up tomorrow morning. Thanks to Mark for helping out with dimensions and photos of the FNA's. This has helped with the drawings for the crane which I should start building in a few weeks. Lyddrail Posted May 29, 2011 Share Posted May 29, 2011 Martin, If it would help you I have a scale plan of the Lydd (Dungeness) crane, this was replaced with a similer new crane a few years ago. I also have many photos and scale track plans of the site as I used to manage the maintenance of the plant in BR times, and I now live at Lydd. A friend built a model of the crane in 7mm from my information. I will try and find the photo I have of it. Good luck with your project. Cheers. Bryn Posted June 9, 2011 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Martin, Personally, I would stick with the TPM FNA and fit the correct bogies from the 2mm Scale Association Shop. I've seen the Farish test shots and still doubt they will get me to part with my hard earned pennies! Here's a picture of my partly completed kit. What you need; 2-394 Wagon bogie Sideframe casting 2000mm FBT6 and Y25 composite frame 2-405Wagon bogie etch stretcher 2000mm FBT6 and Y25 composite frame They run well and are surprisingly straight forward to build. Bryn, Thanks for the shot of the bogie. Mark (post above) has kindly offered to lend me his TPM FNA's for taking photos of on the diorama when it is finished. I may wait until the Farish version comes out to compare models before I buy any. A little progress has been made on the layout with the concrete track laid and the timbers laid for the turnout. i don't have any pics just now but will have some next week some time. The DRS class 57 will have a decoder fitted shortly and i hope to complete the turnout so I can test it and get on with painting and ballasting. I've been extremely busy at work recently and teaching my girlfriend to drive so haven't had much time to do anything. The trackwork is almost finished, just the switch rails to install. Once this is finished I can paint the track and get it ballasted. The portacabin kit is currently on order and the CAD designs for the security fencing, posts and crane parts are almost ready to be sent away to the etchers. I'll be on the DEMU stand at the St Andrews model railway exhibition this weekend building the crane so I should have some up to date pics early next week. I apologise for the poor quality pics below. I usually use my iPhone 4 but it is currently away for repair as it lost an argument with a fork lift at work. I managed to build the structural frame for the crane at St Andrews at the weekend while on the DEMU stand. I'm quite pleased with how it has turned out so now have to get on with the CAD design for the etched components. The etch design for the security fencing and gates is almost complete so I can send the artwork away within the next few weeks. Other work I have completed(although not visible from the pics) is the concrete road surface. The turnout needs the switch blades to complete then I can paint the track and ballast it all. The crane fits in very well and having seen it up close at St Andrews the photos don't due it justice as it is an extremely fine constructed model with all the various plastic strip sections used to make it. Will be interesting to see your etched parts when they are ready. Remind me before Ayr to bring the flasks with me again as they are all packed for moving at the moment. Sorry no pics of this progress yet but i will get some up to date pics posted here in the next few days. I have finally managed to send away the artwork for the etched parts for the crane and the security fencing. A screenshot of the artwork is below. Some of the parts look like solid brass as the mesh detail is extremely fine at 0.24mm and doesn't display on screen until you zoom in. Rammstein2609 Posted September 24, 2011 Author Share Posted September 24, 2011 Hi all, I've spent a bit of time in the garage today finishing off the track including painting and putting down some greenery. I also had to repaint the backscene as a few marks had appeared from handling. Tomorrow I should hopefully get the remaining street lighting and crane lighting completed but I won't install them until I have installed the security fencing. After the fencing has been installed I can add some bushes and general clutter. A massive thumbs up to PPD who managed to get the etches out to me in 2 days. That's the second time I have used them and on both occasions they have been quick and extremely helpful. I have almost finished folding and soldering all the parts together to complete the crane. Here are some pics of the etches and some parts cut from the etch and folded up.
