Modelling BR Blue

Welcome to the ‘Modelling BR Blue' group :)

Originally I had intended to create a ‘Modelling the 1970s’ group, but since so much of the things that defined that period overlapped into the 1980s as well, why not expand the range to a more general ‘corporate blue’ group?

So what will we be covering? Well I’m not looking to move anything from elsewhere into this group – I don’t want to split RMWeb by having some layout threads in here and others in the ‘Layout topics’ forum for example, but I would like to have links to threads and articles elsewhere on RMWeb that are relevant to this era. And it’s that ‘reference’ aspect that I’m really hoping to create & develop. My own interest in a 1970s group was based around the need for reference materials and information to improve the accuracy of my own modelling, so that will be the primary focus of what we’re trying to do here – links, references, and discussions on how to go about modelling the BR blue period.

Thanks for joining, and let’s see where we go from here.

Hi all

I am all for modelling the BR blue period happend totally by accident tho I had always modelled the mid 1990's to the present day as this is when I grew up.

However I decided I needed a class 26 for my Muirness layout was going to go for the dutch liveried one but spotted a bargin on one of the box shiffters websites and duly purchased 26024 in BR blue (always a good performer at Boness diesel galas) I got the loco and two BR blue MK2 coaches for less than 90 quid and that was the start of my BR blue modeling!

In addition a house move led me to using my Inverknowes Yard layout for the first time this was meant to be a diorama but with the addition of a small board it was fully operational again this was intended to be a mid 1990's early 2000's layout but I found the modern locos class 56,60,66 just too large when shuntting wagons the shorter wheelbased class 20 and class 26 both in BR blue were perfect for the task I have just got a class 06 as well and have purchesed some BR 16t minerals.

Nothing looks better than a single class 20 nose first with an open wagon OBA,OCA and a brake van!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

regards

Dave

quite by accident and with no intention of modelling BR blue  or a layout for that matter  here i stand building up stock to build  my signal box area  from 1981-82

it started by buying a Hornby 47 for a poseable model for an oil painting i am doing  and sort of escalated

i also enjoy restoring basket cases

Indeed, but must admit that the Class 31 with its weathering looks just like the version of D5578 i am planning to recreate.

Here is a link to my blog on converting a Craftsman Class 07 to fit on on a Bachmann Chassis

And here is my recent project to make a Class 13

Hi there, I too am all for the “corporate era”. I suppose it all came about from my Dad who worked for BR first with Steam at Colwick M.P.D then finished during the 80’s at Nottingham. I was spoilt for choice when it came to Loco Types ranging from 08’s, 20’s, Peak’s to the mighty Deltics. For me being born in the early 70’s BR Blue dominated but there were some that still carried the very faded BR green. As for modelling, it all started with steam, as Dad was trying his hardest to convert me to his era on the railway by showing me pictures in books and being dragged around the baron waste land of the former Colwick Loco I was always drawn to the Diesels simply because they were there and I could watch them from the end of our street! There are times where I wish I could turn the clock back just to re-live some of the sights and sounds that I experienced as a kid, but alas we all can but wish. Today I am able to re-live some of those moments be it in 00 as I have taken some brave pills and between me and my brother have constructed a layout of “Grimsby Town”, an area of the Eastern Region where anything goes so to speak!

Hi everyone,

Can BR Blue expand to include green diesels that are post-steam but haven't yet transitioned to blue?  (Currently fleet extends to three in blue, with another two in green, all with pre-TOPS numbers.)

Thanks.

Alex.

In what part of Britain did class 31s operate most (in the blue era), and on what type of train?

There is a table about 1/2 way down with the distribution in 1974.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_31#Operation

Others will be able to provide more detailed information but my understanding is that they took on a variety of duites (e.g. ECS moves between Paddington and Old Oak Common, Passenger trains in the South West, and various freight workings).
