timppl
Hello all I am getting into railway modelling again after > 30 years away. I will be building all my own track, in 3.5/4 mm scale. I have built a test section of dual gauge track using some code 65 rail I had lying around and C+L ST baseplates on wooden sleepers made from 2mm thick drink stirrers. This went pretty well apart from the number of baseplates I managed to break ( the attrition rate was quite high ). So far so good. However, I now need to build a point and will need to get some slide chairs. There are various makes available ( c+l, exactoscale, peco etc. ). I want to keep my options open with suppliers for baseplates, slide chairs etc. so, as you all seem very knowledgeable about such things, I want to know if these various items are compatible wrt for example the height the rail is held above the sleepers. Any help gratefully recieved Tim
RMweb Gold Donw Posted June 12, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 12, 2011 In 0 gauge C+L and Peco flexi track have slightly different height. As the build-it yourself components will match their flexi track I would not try to mix the two. I would expect the 00 track to be the same. Also there are variations in the rail sections. I would use one make for a turnout or length of track and then use paking shims at any change to the next section. Don
timppl
Thanks Donw, I thought there probably would be a need for packing, I built a test section of track fastening the chairs to the sleepers with MEK and when I inspected it discovered that the thickness of the chairs seems to have varied, presumably because I may have overdone the solvent a little and possibly the pressure while the solvent evaporated. So I guess I will have to be a bit "suck it and see" Tim
