Dapol v Farish spoked wheels

Dapol seem to have gone over to spoked wheels in N scale, finally. Noticed them on their 'Hatfield Main' 4 wheeler.

Differences from the Farish wheel.

Diameter at flange, slightly less 6.26mm vs 6.33mm (average)

Dia at wheel face the same 6.20mm

Width of tyre, less 1.8mm vs 2mm

Axle width, less, 1mm vs 1.6mm

Axle length, less 14.25mm vs 15.2mm

Hub diameter, 2.3mm vs 2.8mm (approx)

Metal tyre thickness: slightly more 0.7mm vs 0.6mm

Wasn't long ago that the Farish wheel was a significant advance, but the Dapol wheel is, I would say, far superior. First, the wheel is coned at a shallower angle. Dia at the wheel face is the same -6.20mm but the Dapol wheel is a lighter colour -although it has been chemically 'blackened' - and it looks slightly bigger. The tyre width is 0.2mm less on the Dapol, this is really noticeable- the spokes on the Farish wheel look overshadowed by the tyre, but not on the Dapol. A major improvement (though probably not visible when under a wagon) is with the hub. Because it uses a 1mm axle, the Dapol wheel hub is 0.5mm less diameter than the Farish, so there is more room for spokes that actually look like something on a real wagon, rather than the fat little stubs on the Farish wheel. Think the spokes are thinner too. With all this, you see a bit more daylight when it's under a wagon. We are getting something closer to a wheel of 2mm standards in N here. Now, I wish they'd sell them as parts.
