Guest Tom F
Evening Chaps I nicked this idea if I'm honest from Max Stafford and the Waverley Group but it seemed like a nice idea! So showcase your rolling stock/layouts depicting the North West. Seen as at the moment, I'm building my stock up for my future North West layout, I have only one loco up to standard, but here she is, Newton Heath Black 5 45102. dikitriki
Hi I'll have a rummage round for suitable pics, but here's one to start with from Heyside set on the Oldham Loop, 7mm scale. Richard
Guest Tom F
Hi I'll have a rummage round for suitable pics, but here's one to start with from Heyside set on the Oldham Loop, 7mm scale. Richard Very nice Richard! Have a good rummage, would love to see more! Tom
dikitriki
Here's another. Not a view normally available, but the buildings had been removed for work which enabled me to get this shot behind the station. The bridges are due to be replaced by etched lattice ones when the test etches arrive, so it will be more redolent of Werneth, complete with signals on the footbridge over the lines. dikitriki
Final one for the moment. I like this one as the train is somewhat dwarfed by the environment. Not easy in 7mm! I will take another one from this angle at the end of the month, when the layout goes back together - it is now ballasted and signalled, and the retaining walls have been built. Guest Max Stafford
Lovely bit of modelling Richard. The finish on the Ivatt in particular is very convincing and your last shot is impressive for its scale and it's conveyance of a Lancashire scene. It's certainly got the 'Ecky Thump' factor! Dave. Guest Tom F
Fully agree with Dave! That Ivatt looks lovely, has a nice greasy texture to it

coachmann
I agree that Ivatt 2-6-0 is very convincing for the era. Those footbridge steps have a lot of Shaw about them. The Stanier 8 on the loop looks good too. I think these locos were reasonably rare in the area in the 1950's with all the Fowler 7F's and Austerities about. dikitriki
Hi Another new loco arrived yesterday for the Heyside fleet. A genuine Oldham Loop loco, it is a JM Products kit with Griffin extras; typical motive power for the area. Richard
Eagle1711
Not strictly from around here during the 1950s.....but it is preserved in Bury on the ELR .....and on Ramsbottom lol
Eagle1711
One that i do beleive was around in 1948 according to www.railuk.info is LMS Hughes Crab 42789 which in 1948 was based at 26A Newton Heath
45584
The enclosed photo is one of a series I have just published in my blog but is relevant to this theme as my Hoghton Bridge shed is based on the L and Y loco depot system. The layout has a long way to go with very little detail so far but that is for the winter months.
terryd147
Adding my fourpennorth, I would like to draw your attention to my 4mm layout based on Hest Bank. It is set in the period 1954-58, so it would seem to qualify as a north west model. It is still very much work-in-progress at the moment (and will be for some considerable time to come); the main topic featuring this layout actually appears under the "Modelling real locations" section of Special Interests, so if you're interested, please look at it there. Meanwhile here is a small taster.
coachmann
BR Standard 2-6-4T's worked the Oldham Loop for a short while in the mid 1950s. Fowler 42323.......My attention was drawn to the bevel rim bogie wheels, which some of these earlier Fowlers acquired, but I wasn't aware they got bevel rim driving wheels. I took the photo below at Lees Shed in 1960. 42337 has bevel rim bogie wheels but not Drivers. A Stockport engines came on shed at Lees every afternoon for fire-disposal, coal and water. coachmann
If there was ow't that shouted 'North West', it was the Austin Seven.......and the Lanky 0-6-0, but I havent got the latter.
Arthur
A few of my models built for my planned North West layout set in the Salford/Eccles area; Hornby Dublo Metro Vick Co Bo, Plodder Lane Coal Tank, Pro Scale Kit, Fowler 2-6-2T, K's kit, Newton Heath Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0, Jidenco Kit and, shouting NORTH WEST, Austin 7 and L&Y 0-6-0. the L&Y 0-6-0 is an MPD kit, and the 7F, Falcon ex-Jidenco. and finally two north west wagons, both from companies in Trafford Park and built from photos in Bradford Barton books, Cowburn & Cowper acid tank wagon, and a Manchester Refineries tank, bit of a liberty with this one, the original was devoid of the name. coachmann
Fantastic Arthur...Where have you been hiding this marvelous stuff...? And I am really envious of you with the Fowler 2-6-2T and LYR A class 0-6-0.
Arthur
.Where have you been hiding this marvelous stuff...?In their boxes in a cupboard!! :-) Seriously, they were mainly built a good while ago and are still awaiting a layout to run on. Thanks too for the kind words Larry, from you, they are much appreciated, glad that they're of interest. Some more from the fleet, My other Jidenco build, Stanier Kitson 0-4-0ST, Bit of a rarity, in more ways than one next, 'Stanier' 0-4-4T from Compass Models, the only kit they produced as far as I know. One was allocated to, I think, Longsight for a time. I took it to the RMWeb members day at Taunton where it ran on the module layout. And finally for today, what did we do before the likes of Bachmann? Here's my Compound, Hornby body with etched smoke box wrapper, Airfix tender body from their 4F, scratch built chassis with bought in turned brass cylinders. Not too happy with the chimney, that might need to go, but not too bad otherwise. Arthur
coachmann
The Stanier 0-4-4T in particular is a delight. The Compound sounds like a bit of good old fashioned modelling from the days before yesterday. Shame you haven't a layout at the moment.
Arthur
Yes, though not really a loco you'd associate strongly with the north west, that 0-4-4T is a favourite. It was a delightful kit to build, as was the MPD A class. Continuing in the 'way we were' theme; Un rebuilt Patriot: , Hornby body, Airfix '4F' tender body, frames from brass strip, Anchoridge D13, Romfords and a valve gear etch and cylinders from, I think, Millholme. Crab; Lima body, another Airfix tender body, frames from scratch, Anchoridge D13, Romfords and using the original Lima cylinders and valve gear. And Fowler 2-6-4T, Hornby body, Perserverance etched tank sides and an etched chassis and valve gear also, I think, from Perserverance. It's probably because of all the time and effort which went into improving these older RTR offerings which make me tolerant of today's models, I really can't get too bothered over a few mil. here or there, or the fact that it's not on the next boat from China. I'm just happy when I get one and to do a bit of simple cosmetic work as suits me.
