Diesel Classes that didn't Transition

Okay, I admit a personal interest here. I'm attempting to derive a definitive list of the liveries Claytons went to the grave wearing.

Then, whilst I set out on this odd pilgrimage of research, it occurred to me that there were several classes to which this obsessive logic could be applied.

Basically, every complete class that was withdrawn pre-TOPS - with the notable exception of Class 52 and 53 (all BFYE) and 14 (all GwSYP) - would have reached the breaker's yard in a variety of liveries. My quest is to determine what point in transition had each class reached?

Feel free to correct me, but of the principal types, excluding shunters, Big Four and prototypes, we're talking about:

  • Class 15 GSYP, GFYE
  • Class 16 GSYP, GFYE - see post 26 below
  • Class 17 GSYP, GFYE, BFYE
  • Class 21 GSYP, BFYE (D6109), some GNYP possibly?
  • Class 22 GSYP, GFYE, BSYP, BFYE
  • Class 23 GSYP, GFYE, BFYE - see post 5 below
  • Class 28 GSYP, GFYE, BFYE - see post 27 below
  • Class 29 TTGFYE, BFYE
  • Class 35 GSYP, GFYE, BSYP, BFYE
  • Class 41 (ok, D600s) GSYP, GFYE?, BFYE see post 3 below
  • Class 42 MSYP, MFYE, BFYE
  • Class 43 MSYP, MFYE, BFYE

I expect the Curtis et al definitive works include the Hymeks and Warships, so if that's the case just reference the book(s) concerned. As for the others, and accepting I won't have the options correct, and we need to allow for oddities like Double-Arrow on Green (aGFYE etc), I'll start to compile a list of each on here that can be updated.

All the NBL shunters went to the grave in green too, since they all went in '67-8.

I think the railbuses were the same. I've read nothing to suggest that any recieved full yellow ends.

I don't think any class 21's were painted GFYE. Its possible some may have been scrapped in plain green as quite a few were placed in store for long periods due to unreliability and NBL going bust.

Not to mention the ones in the strategic reserve ;)

Some 21s reached the scrappie in all-green, I know I've seen a pic but can never remember where

I can't place my 30% complete list of Flying Greenhouses yet, that will surface over the weekend, I'm sure. Now, how about Wonderloaves, I'm sure we can crack them - there are enough Carnforth and Upperby shots to nail the withdrawn ten-wheelers, aren't there?

For starters, City Boy's '5705' (remember that, pop pickers) was seen in the year of that song's release in the GSYP in which it ended its working life.

EDIT: Based on BD's link below, this is how the 'loaves ended up:

D5700 GSYP

D5701 BFYE

D5702 -6 GSYP

D5707/ 8 GFYE

D5709 - 19 GSYP

OMG, what a photo:

I don't think that brick gangway mod did it any favours. Why didn't they just weld it?

OK, now back to the NBL class 16's. Obviously they were all GNYP and GSYP at one point. The evidence uncovered so far allows us to fill in a couple of blanks about their final guises:

D8400 - GSYP#5

D8401 - GFYE

D8402 - GFYE

D8403 - GFYE#3

D8404 - GSYP#4

D8405 - GSYP

D8406 - GFYE

D8407 - GFYE

D8408 - GSYP#1

D8409 - GSYP#2

#1 Unusual panel on short hood end. Used grille as border for yellow. Although there are no scrapyard shots of D8408, the shots taken by Grahame Wareham and Jim Connor were both taken in the late 60's. These loco's were withdrawn en-masse in 1968.

#2 Looking at Grahame's shot of D8409, she has a buffer missing, and is more than likely a hair's breadth away from becoming razor blades.

#3 Picture in BR Fleet Survey 1

#4 Picture of her being cut at Cox & Danks, Acton (Sixties Diesels & Electrics Remembered) Yellow warning panel in same style as D8408 on short hood end.

#5 There is a shot in Modern Locomotives Illustrated of D8400 at 30A in 1967. I would say it was the final guise of this loco. The yellow warning panel style is standard on both ends.

D8406 also sported a similar SYP to D8404/D8408 on its 'B' end.

I'm blighted from daytime posting due to workplace settings - how prescient the I.T department must be dry.gif

However, when the evening rolls around the web's my lobster, and I can attempt this, a kickstart of the Clayton graveside garb list.... gaps 'n all. References are 85% graveyard photos, at least where green machines are concerned. The rest are from photos that claim to have been taken at or just after the known withdrawal date of the loco concerned. Some of this is caption-driven inaccuracy when the loco's number is unclear. If a Clayton turned blue, in a photo of any vintage with the number clear, then it's assumed to have met its maker like that, and not received InterCity Swallow, Island Line or Colas finery at some unrecorded juncture....

Note, I compiled this before Fotopic's demise, and I failed to record links or captions to the locos concerned.

D8605 in scrapyard condition. Tantalisingly, there's no way of knowing her livery.

http://www.railbrit....e2.php?id=34733

Hmmmm, having checked a few other photos, I'm prepared to suggest livery is GSYP, as the FYE did wrap round the noses sufficiently that it would be seen in the above shot, were it applied to the loco.

Some of my notes that I have collected, on these locos during their short lives. Which may be of help for anyone modelling the class 29's.

Liveries carried:

D6100 BFY

D6101 GSY, GFY

D6102 GSY, GFY

D6103 GSY, GFY

D6106 GSY, GFY

D6107 BFY

D6108 BFY

D6112 GSY, GFY

D6113 GSY, GFY

D6114 GSY, GFY

D6116 GSY, GFY

D6119 BFY

D6121 GSY, GFY

D6123 GSY, GFY

D6124 BFY

D6129 BFY

D6130 GSY, GFY

D6132 GSY, GFY

D6133 GSY, GFY

D6137 BFY

With the exception of the more unique D6123 which carried small yellow lower panels. The rest of the green livered locos carried a more square yellow panel with all four corners rounded, the exception being D6102, 21 & 32 which had the lower corners rounded off whilst the upper corners would be at a slanted angle. All green locos would later receive full yellow ends between July 1970 and August 71, the last been D6112.

Seven of the class received BFY when converted to class 29.

D6100 was unusual in that it was fitted with large BR arrows on the engine room doors (it also later received two cab doors from cl21 D6109 which had the arrows on doors). D6107 had BR arrows on all four cab sides and numbers on engine room body sides. These two locos were also unusual in that the yellow extended around the cab sides and onto the cab roof.

The other five members of the class in blue had the more standard yellow fronts, with running numbers on all four cab sides and small BR arrows on cab doors.

D6100 -19 had the eyebrow vents above the cab windows

The only members to be fitted with metal bars on the cab door windows, to protect them from swinging tokens were: D6103, 06, 07 & 23.

D6112, 13, 14, 16, 23, 30, 32, 33 & 37 all carried shedplates at some stage during their lives as cl29's.

D6102, 08, 13, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24, 29, 32 & 37 had a small grill below the radiator grill on one side, which was carried over from their lives as cl21's.

May I also point out a livery variation I knew nothing of, in the slideshow on post 30 above, the pic of 8508 in green full yellow ends, has had the cab ends painted in the dark loco green, leaving only the side window area in the light green. All the other in green have light green cab ends.
