Class 501 Photos

Guys,

I have only a few class 501 pics - if these help or inspire then great. As a mere solitary user of the NLL (as part of a typical 80's Railrover jaunt) I was left with the impression that this was very much a forgotten part of BR - but all the more interesting for it.

All taken in July 1984 at Broad Street, Highbury & Islington and Camden Road.

I was at the Northolt Model Railway Exhibition yesterday (great Show as ever thanks to Stephen & the team) and gut who lives in Wembley who I have got to know at many Shows as he is an NLL and Class 501 fan gave me a copy of the photo below. It shows withdrawn Class 501's stored in the Wembley Carriage sidings in 1985. I have cleaned up the photo as there was a small amount of damage but what a great shot.

I used to use the Harrow & Wealdstone to Broad Street service to get to work during the 80s. A very useful link that went downhill once Broad St was closed and trains were diverted around the GE. I was always amazed just how many NLR signal boxes survived during that time, I imagine all have gone now.

Is that with barrier vehicles? Why wouldn't the loco be able to couple directly to the 501? Didn't they have screw couplings? Or is it for braking purposes, and if so, why?

I noticed this too and yes the 501's did have screw couplings. Maybe the Class 81 was air braked only, hence they needed some extra brake force and used a barrier vehicle or there was a problem with coupling a Class 81 directly to a 501?

I remember going through all those units while they were standing there, with one of our senior relaying supervisors. We were looking for DC isolating paddles we could rehome. But someone else had beaten us to it, and they were already gone.
