Can I mention a couple of items of Southern interest that might otherwise get under the radar?

7mm Scale rolling stock – Roxey Mouldings

7mm Scale/0 Gauge kits arriving shortly will be:

Kit No. 7C44 LBSCR 1909 Push Pull driving composite. LBSCR Diagram 109/111, SR Diagram 434/435. Developed from the 4mm kit which is still available, it features etched brass bogies, rolled brass roof, sprung buffers, etched partitions, seats and alternative Brighton and SR driving ends. The kit costs £135.00 plus £5.00 P&P. Wheels are not included, but Roxey can supply their own turned steel sets at £14.30 for plain disc or £15.30 for Mansell per coach.

To match will be 7C45 Push Pull Trailer Third SR Diagram 79. These are the coaches converted by SR from LBSCR overhead electric driving trailers. Specification and prices are as 7C44.

These two kits formed SR/BR sets No.s 751-760 and lasted until about 1960.

post-9472-0-53726200-1310379383_thumb.jpg

Roxey will also be able to supply 7A527 LBSCR Plate Bogie at £20.50 without wheels and 7A526 LBSCR Heavy Fox Bogie at £18.00 without wheels. P&P on these £2.50 per order.

Dave will be using the bogies and casting generated for these kits to upgrade the ex-MSC 48ft bogie coaches and push pull units.

Also possible if there is any interest are the Diagram 168 Brake Third, Diagram 92 Composite and Diagram 198/171 Third.

4mm Scale Signalling Components - EBM

Mike Waldron of EBM kits is considering offering the Saxby and Farmer Type 5 windows as an option. He has done some home-brewing – not without success. If sufficient people are interested, he will offer them commercially, provided there is sufficient demand to warrant the initial outlay. Could people please contact Mike on mike@mjwsjw.co.uk if they want to express interest?

Go to the EBM website at http://www.mjwsjw.co.uk/page23.html to see them – and click on the signal box on http://www.mjwsjw.co.uk/page13.html right at the foot of the page to see the .pdf artwork, to see if your preferences are catered for.

Mike Waldron,

e-mail to mike@mjwsjw.co.uk

Hope these may be of interest.

Best wishes

Eric

In order to keep the Product Review / Discussion links thread simply to links to discussion on Southern / BR(S) products elsewhere on this forum I have created this topic to either post relevent news items or heads up links to other news items elsewhere either on or off the forum.

I hope that makes sense feel free to add any news items or links relevent to the Southern, BR(S) or constituents.

I have arranged for Eric's recent news post to be moved into this thread (but due its original posting date it now resides above this post, I hope that's not too confusing!)

CRT Kits are to produce in 4mm scale an SR 53' bogie scenery van to diagram 3182 (used for the transporting circus scenery and elephants) in etched brass and cast whitemetal, preformed roof and will include all parts bar couplings and wheels.

Due out in the autumn, price TBC.

More details from CRT Kits at Poplars Farm, Aythorpe Roding Dunmow Essex CM6 1RY (01279 876402).

It is assumed this a reduction of their 7mm kit. If so, it should be pretty good, if a complex build.

This nicely will fill the gap in kits for the Southern range of luggage / PLV / Parcles and Utility Vans. Further information on the other kits available can be found on my page on the SeMG website here Obviously Van C's (BR designation BY) are now also available from Hornby.

Some of the Autumn collection of bits and pieces for Southern Modellers

7mm Scale Buildings – Lasercraft

A kit is now available in 7mm scale to build a model of a brick-based Saxby and Farmer signal box, the prototype being the 'box at Drayton on the South Coast Line. The kit is produced and marketed by Lasercraft Devon from laser cut wood or mdf and appears very accurate, in particular the delicacy of the window frames. All brickwork has been etched in. At the time of ordering it was described as LSWR, but this is understood to have been corrected. Current cost is £42.50 + £3.50 p&p.

4mm Scale Loco – Chivers Finelines

The Chivers Finelines kit for the Billinton D3 is now available at £45. Full details are available from

http://www.chiversfinelines.com

4mm scale Gem loco kit

Those who like their loco kits in whitemetal will be pleased to know that the kit for a Gladstone, originally produced by Gem, is available again from Lytchett Manor Models, who have taken over the former Gem range.

The loco is available as a body kit (both loco and tender) for £42-50 and chassis for £32-00; as usual, wheel sets, motor and gears are not included. Tooling for the castings has been refurbished recently and the chassis is a recent redesign.

4mm Rolling Stock – 5&9 Models

Chris Cox is pleased to announce that he has finally got around to producing two new kits for the 5&9 Models range!

He has produced a new mould for the two Grande Vitesse vans. The first is the longer version of the standard van, which was previously available from Woodham Wagon Works. The second is the more controversial 'high roofed' van as seen in Bedford's photos etc. Chris hopes to have completed models of both kits by the end of October. They will be available at £12.00 each plus the usual £2,00 p+p per order from the 5&9 Models address shown below. The price includes all castings and etched w irons with brakes from EB Models.

4mm Scale Rolling Stock - EBM

A while ago, Mike Waldron prepared an ‘ends and duckets’ fret (in artwork form only so far) to convert Roxey’s Stroudley 6 wheeled brake into the Billinton 26’ version with similar (though actually slightly higher) sides and higher roof profile. If enough people are interested, Mike will send it off to the etchers to have it made available.

It has been deduced from various available drawings, and, with the higher roof profile, reflects the Billinton style, although it may not satisfy the perfectionist. Mike does not intend to produce a complete dedicated kit unless there is public outcry for one!

Mike is also working on some braked goods Brighton W irons – suitable for GV vans (see 5&9 Models above). These are an extension of the present straight Brighton goods W iron, but with brakes. All the same dimensions are used, with the brakes being attached to, and slightly overlapping the current W iron ‘face’. This is done to enable users of the other curved and straight designs to be well prepared for these.

2mm Rolling Stock – Etched Pixels

No new products, but the various things in the LB&SCR range that were sold out are back in stock. At this point the plan is to release the next two Billinton coaches around Christmas time.

Web site is at http://www.etchedpixels.co.uk/

Best wishes

Eric

Although already out else where on the web I will be posting details and further information about the Hornby 2012 Southern related releases, including pictures of the pre-production samples as well as some Hornby supplied images on my blog on Tuesday morning (to, unlike some blogs and forums, respect Hornby's intended release date) at www.grahammuz.com

As recently promised I have posted today on my blog, a summary of the Southern related Hornby 2012 releases along with additonal prototype information. On my blog I have included both images of the pre-production models and also some of the Hornby supplied images.

My full blog post can be viewed by clicking here.

The highlights are as follows:

BR(s) Converted Maunsell Pull- Push Sets and Third/Second Open

Twenty Pull Push sets were converted by BR(SR) from late 1959 to mid 1960 as replacements for earlier Pull Push sets of SR and pre-grouping design, such as the ex LSWR Gate Stock sets that have already been announced by Kernow Models.

They consisted of an 1935 built ex-Diagram 2403 Maunsell Brake Corridor Composite and a Diagram 2023 (ex 1930 built Diagram 2005) Maunsell Second Open (was designated a Third Open until 1956) neither were styles previously produced by Hornby.

The Second / Third Open type will also be released as a Diagram 2005 loose coach.

SR / BR(s) Bogie Van B

Following on from Hornby’s lovely four wheeled Van C released a couple of years ago, the addition of the bogie Van B is a natural and often asked for progression as currently only the Ratio kit is available.

Other items

In addition to the above totally new items there will be DCC Sound fitted versions of rebuilt Merchant Navy 35023 Holland-Afrika Line and rebuilt West Country 34040 Crewkerne. The Railroad range will also gain the original old style 'Schools' Class as 911 'Dover' in pre 1931 livery, but with loco drive in place of the old tender mounted Ringfield motor. New liveries include: a short frame M7 249 and narrow cab T9 708 with watercart tender both in SR Bulleid black , SR Green N15 771 'Sir Sagramore', wide splasher T9 30313 with late totem and original West Country 34001 'Exeter' with early emblem.

Britannia class appears as 70004 "William Shakespeare" in full Golden Arrow regalia.

Hornby have advised their intent to ensure that all are release during the calendar year, and are sufficiently advanced in the design / production process to achieve this, having resolved some of the supply chain issues experienced during 2011 (which includes the use of new factories / companies in China) and as such all are programmed to appear no later than the 3rd Quarter.

Thanks Graham, and Happy New Year - it's a bit quieter here than the main Hornby 2012 topic!

I'm pleased that the push-pull set is available on its own as well as with the M7 - although I might still be tempted by the full pack if they do a decent job on the p-p fittings on the loco.

Loose low-window third as a spin-off is both obvious and very welcome.

I note the full Hornby list does not indicate any Brighton Belle variants beyond what we know already, especially anything that's useful for the 30 years between the two options announced. Do you know any more that you can tell us?

Rod, I assume that the existing p-p version of the M7 is the one that will be offered - note the air tank under the buffer beam. I'm not an M7 expert, but the one I've got looks sufficiently authentic with pumps & gubbins etc.

All i know at this stage is that Hornby have confirmed finally the actual details of the imminent releases namely:

That the 1934 umber and cream set will consist of driving cars 3rd class numbers 88 and 89, 3rd class trailer No.86 and 1st class trailer cars Hazel and Doris.

The 1967 blue and grey driving cars are S292S and S293S and the trailers are 2nd class S285S and 1st class S281S and S283S.

It does leave the window open for 2013 to release the other Umber and Cream livery varient.

I am assumeing that the 2Bil has been held back perhaps due the delay in the 5Bel from last year to next month and also the mixed reaction tot he 4Vep.

Thanks again Graham. Hopefully in due course they will include names and numbers as appropriate for all three units for those of us who would like all of them! ;)

I note from your blog the Britannia in full Arrow regalia - I find that encouraging in my wish/prediction for a Class 71 in the not-too-distant future!

From the purely Southern aspect, not so much an announcement as an non-event however in these financially constrained times and Hornby's committment to London 2012, what should we expect?

Rather than agree with everyone that the Bogie B* was an inspired choice, I would have preferred a thoroughly modern version of the SR aged utility van.

Unfortunately the lack of releases does force the question what should been released but that can wait until the frothfest later this year but I do not expect any balanced response from Hornby as I cannot discern any logical content in their release programme unless it is to maximise margins for the quickest possible return.

No Southern wagons is hardly surprising as there as no new wagons from Hornby and as I gaze across my goods sidings, the number of Hornby wagons that are of a sufficiently high standard to warrant their purchase is less than those from Parkside - the remainder arrive in nice blue boxes.

Tim

*Excuses have been made that the Ratio Bogie B is unpleasant to build however I find that it merely takes patience and fortitude to construct an accurate model from the kit- two qualities in short supply in today's modelling community?

3 new coaches and a van aren't a non event really. Add Hornbys other re paints, the Kernow O2 and coaches and Bachmanns imminent pillbox brake and if they are all delivered on time 2012 that's a good selection.

patience and fortitude to construct an accurate model from the kit

And if you have them then there's a lot more options ;)

It strikes me that a useful resource would be collecting a lot of the info on here and SEMG etc into a list that shows what sets are possible with the models available and where to get transfers to number them correctly. That would provide a resource that those with less experience could be pointed to to make accurate modelling easier. To be honest I've never worried about making up prototypical sets as I'm more interested in the overall impression as I direct my research time to layouts that I exhibit rather than the shed layout. If there was a one stop shop though for enhancing rtr stuff then I'd be likely to spend a bit of time on it. Just a thought for someone who already knows the info.

As the discussion concerned the Hornby releases what relevance are the Kernow and Bachmann releases? Using the excuse that Kernow and Bachmann have produced something does nothing to mitigate the paucity of Hornby's releases.

What "paucity"? An Arthur, a Schools, couple of T9s, couple of M7s, a Maunsell saloon, a Maunsell pull-push set, Bogie Bs in two liveries and no doubt some more modern stuff that doesn't register with me. A decade ago that would have seemed off the scale in scope and quality. Have we really the right to expect so much more in these tough times for all businesses?
