RMweb Gold mcowgill Posted May 1, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2013 The police that keep an eye on these are the Civil Nuclear Constabulary http://www.cnc.police.uk/ who have their own police station at Sizewell. I've had a couple of 'meetings' with them while taking photos on the branch, they perform 'stop and identify' interviews from time to time where they make a note of the troublemakers pointing DSLRs at the train! All very civilsed and they will wait for the train to go past first as they said they had no wish to stop me from taking photographs, if only security staff at other locations had such a sensible attitude. The only problem with being stopped is that it does tend to put the kybosh on jumping in the car and haring off after the train to overtake it before the next level crossing! Martin Edit - just noticed my avatar is a class 20 creeping over one of the branch crossings!
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted May 1, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2013 I think the fact that I was an official secret for 10 years helps my case too ! RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 1, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2013 Dave, So far as you know does the policing of these movements come under the aegis of the MoD Police? On at least one of your shots some personnel seem to be located in the trailing cab of the second loco or was that an illusion? Thanks, again, for the great photos of East Anglia - I'm so pleased that you moved there! Best, Pete. These are civilian traffic and normally nothing whatsoever to do with the MoD Pete - we never had any MoD interest in the flasks at Bridgwater during my time and in fact they didn't seem over interested in their own (it goes bang!!) stuff either! There are movements which do involve the MoD police but if I tell you about them I'll have to eat the evidence or something - so I won't.
trisonic
Mike, Do they still shift munitions around by train? I was thinking today about those Trident missiles in Scotland if they decide to go independent and nuke free.... At a low point in my musical career I very nearly joined the MoD Police. Odd life I've had... Best, Pete.
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 1, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 1, 2013 The more sensitive "coal" movements are those that involve spent fuel from submarines. They are accompanied by a couple of coaches allegedly carrying personnel that you probably don't want to mess with! http://www.flickr.com/photos/rabbipx/7131602863/ Cheers, Mick
trisonic
Nice photo too. The problem with that set up is that a couple of handheld rocket launchers would take out both carriages instantly. Now if that was me, I'd follow behind on another train. Sometimes to defend you must attack. Any SAS guy will tell you that 100% of the time they would rather be assaulting a location than be inside of it trying to defend it. That's enough for now, probably! Best, Pete. When I was a "nuke" we had ..... (say no more) but it was hidden behind an innocuous door, the boring stuff (such as the toiletry store) was "hidden" behind "DANGER KEEP OUT, RADIOACTIVITY" signs - and guess where friends of the earth used to head for if they got into the site ... (until PC Al Sation persuaded them to run away as quickly as possible) 20312 and 20308 today with two little friends in tow.

trisonic
Nice, Dave! Photos four and five show nicely what people mean by the "Threepenny Bit" shape of the 37's windscreen area. Who gets that right in 00??? Thanks, Pete.

(Ace photos BTW) Hi Pete, Most (all?) of the 37's running these days have reinforced windows - easily recognised by the flat metal surround, rather than the rubber grommet that used to hold them in. The new windows are marginally smaller than the original. Brian at Shawplan does an excellent etches for variations of the 37's Cheers, Mick

paulears
I like the Gt Yarmouth label as the destination - there's so little photographic material on the old Beccles to Gt Yarmouth line, especially the high and low level Haddiscoe stations, with the interchanges to the Lowestoft to Norwich line. Debs.
I only ever worked in the right-hand seat on one flask-train turn (Chester-Carnforth); I think I recall the flask having a 'continental-van' at each end acting as barrier wagons (this was back in the 70`s); do they not use barriers/shocks at all now? On that run, I remember we had some special instructions issued (e.g instant reporting at red-pegs) and we carried some kind of 'officer' in the rear cab; his employ/role was not discussed. Flasks seem smaller and less 'obvious' these days.

The CNC - Civial Nuclear Constablary are responsible for the safe transportation of nuclear material within the UK, this includes rail and road. They have powers of the civil police, the normal operational remit allows for patrol within a 5 mile radius of nuclear sites and transportation ie. a train. The personnal in the rear cab of the train is the DRS Trainman who undertakes shunting etc. it's part of the DRS safety case they double man the trains and provide two locomotives.
