Lima UKF Palvans - adding a little variety

Recommended Posts

Lee's mention this morning of his fastfreight bogie etch..

http://www.rmweb.co....__fromsearch__1

..has reminded me that I've promised to re-run an etched sheet I did to convert the Lima (now Hornby) later Procor built UKF palvan, to the earlier Gloucester/BREL built batches of van. These arn't an absolutely faithful conversion, as the various builders seem to ahve managed to build several different lengths of van, but it gives a bit of visual variety.

If anyone would like a set, plese could you send me a PM and I'll make sure enough get etched - they are likely to cost bout £2.50 per wagon.

The first run was done in 12 thou nickle silver, but that was a bit thin and needed reinforcing with L section, the next batch will be 18thou brass to beef them up a bit.

Hi - like the look of these, I only want a short rake so I'd probably only need 1 etch; if that's enough to get you making a batch I'll PM my details to you.

One question - you show the van in primer, then a completed rake; where did you get the UKF transfers from? If they are available, it might be an option to buy up other liveries 7 not just restrict to UKF examples....

I did them myself on crafty computer paper - unfortunately I can't upload a word document here, but i've attached the jpgs - they look a bit wonky on screen, but are fine once printed.

Jon, that's a very useful etch there, you'll have another PM...

For anyone using the UKF transfers from ebay, available here;

Be aware that they appear to have copied the Hornby re-release, so the UKF lettering is a little too large and the 'Fertilizers' lettering is brown rather than green. Guess how I found that out :umbrage: .....

I've just discovered this photo

Looks like the leading wagon is a flat top conversion (was there only one? ) and third back appears to be the 'gull-wing'

Unique Jon, LS7050, W H Davis, 1975.

When built and in it's early days of service it was in all over stainless steel.

Got the number of the big bird somewhere but can't find it. Watch this space!

Do you know when it got rebuilt as the original LS7050 didn't have the trussing along the side??

I did have doubts when I first saw that, but didn't have my notes (which I left on the DEMU forum) I think there was another different type, with a slightly pitched roof, I haven't found photo's on line, but I'm sure there are some in one or other of those things made of dead wood - I might have to go and have a look now. EDIT yes BR vans v2 (G. Gamble) LS7007 in Kemira blue..

The other photo I've seen of the gullwing conversion is here:

Here's a few pics showing an UKF train at Hooton; I thought I had better photos of the wagons - if I do, they're hiding!

Taken on a sunday in 1979/80 (during the week they ran via Middlewich).

Arriving from West Cheshire Jcn and going into the run round sidings.

Leaving for Chester and points south (Truro or Gillingham, I think)

Going away.

On August bank holiday 1978 I was lucky enough to be given a cab ride on 47 028 from Ince to Crewe on one of these trains. This photo was taken in the UKF sidings at Ince. The loco is going to propel the train up to West Cheshire Junction and then travel via Hooton to Crewe. This was because Middlewich box was closed due to the bank holiday

I was told photography was frowned on by UKF so I couldn't have a wander over to the ex BR class 10 they used to have and had to be content with this one shot.
