RMweb Premium Andy Kirkham Posted October 8, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 8, 2011 I made an excursion to Pembrokeshire the other day and was interested to note the metal ramp at the end of the line on the second (disused) platform. It appears to be for loading and unloading road vehicles. But what sort of traffic could this be? The branch has no freight traffic as far as I know. The ramp could well be a long-disused relic, but the palisade fence on the left incorporates a sliding gate to allow the passage or road vehicles, which suggests that a possible future use of the ramp is still envisaged. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 8, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2011 Most likely it is for for military traffic to/from the nearby(ish) Casle Martin ranges although probably not all that frequently used nowadays.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted October 8, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2011 In the past there were trains of armoured vehicles / tanks on the way to the Castlemartin ranges for training exercises. The ramp here looks very recent (no weed growth) but I have to wonder if it's used for the same reason? EDIT - Stationmaster beat me to it!"
LNERGE
This is a portable ramp used to load Warflat or Warwells.
HGT1972
The ramp was delivered by lorry and was numbered 95X20. It was a converted former Freightliner flat. Two of these flats had been modified to ramps in 1979 - 95X20 (ex-54C44) and 95X21 (ex-56J20). The ramp was here permanently by 2000 but sadly is no longer used. As far as I know there haven't been any further MoD trains since July 2000, all the subsequent ones unloaded at Haverfordwest using a former British Army of the Rhine ramp wagon built to the German loading gauge and permanently stabled there. Hope that helps?
Nickinwestwales
Andy,Hi-Can confirm HGT1972`s comments, the ramp at H/West is the current destination de jour and the siding serving it and the one adjacent have both been recently reballasted-the last train I saw there had both sidings full of a mix of flats & wells with a 66 on the point-Back to the Dock, the bank on the right of your pic is the remnants of the old carriage dock-served by a stub siding kicked back from the platform road to the right of where you were standing. Next time you are down, enjoy a fine pint and the best of the local music scene in the pub in the old waiting room ATB Nick
