A few photos from the journey as well as of the depot at Sibiu where I was kindly allowed to take photographs by the depot foreman. All photos taken between September 7 and 11 2011. Cheers, Keith That is an interesting looking station behind there! Meh, I hate foreign guff! EDIT: That was meant to be the picture of the class 86! AS a fan of the Taurus loks, I'll have to go one of these days to see the 1047s and the GYSEV locos. I just love them in the MAV blue and yellow livery! Back in 1990, I sneakily grabbed a shot of something like your CFR class 80 centre cab diesel but in Poland, the driver saw me and was shaking his fist at me!! RMweb Gold tractionman Posted October 23, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 23, 2011 Thanks for the positive comments - I'd definitely recommend a visit to Romania for the traction (and scenery) - I had a really positive reception from the staff on the railways - eg. a friendly wave from the driver of 60-0832-0 as he opened up the loco leaving Sibiu, a loco fitted not with a horn but a whistle! He'd seen me beforehand taking various shots of his machine and called down from the cab in Romanian (so all I could do was smile back). It was all very laid-back. I snapped the Floyd '86' (0450 004-1) at Arad I think it was (or Curtici?), on the return to Budapest from Sibiu - I too fondly remember them in the '70s and '80s - oh so many of them - running past my house when I was young (in Coventry). Anyway, here's another shot of it (grabbed from an open door on my train). The station at start and end of the sequence is Budapest's Nyugati station where my journey began and ended - 10 hours in a 4 coach loco-hauled train with no buffet, and all for around 19 Euro each way! Loads of interesting stations en route... these were in Romania. Many were well-used and most seemed to be staffed. In Budapest. About to leave Budapest's Nyugati station with the 'Transylvannian' to Sibiu. Loco activity early on a Monday morning in Sibiu. Thanks, I just liked the big expanse of glass and metal behind. I first saw Hungarian locos in 1996 and thought back then how with their yellow front ends they were vaguely like the BR locos I remember from the old days...Keith Poland is the same, except that a lot are/were two tone green with yellow ends (some including chrome and yellow lining along the body). After seeing the EU - 06s (the Polish class 83s) and -07s (the Polish copies), I have a pretty good idea of how the Roarers (class 81 - 85) would have looked if they hadn't been painted into electric blue. I'm more of a leccy man myself by the way, but we were there to drive the steam locos at Wolsztyn and saw many of the EU - 07s up close stabled at Leszno, etc. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was really impressed by how many of them were nicly presented (white buffers and white wheels) Something else that really impressed me was how the station master would come out and stand to attention whenever a train would pass through the rural stations. Floyd also have the former 56101 in Hungary as well. A railtour is planned in October using a 56 and 86 over 2 days with a Nohab.
