BBC local news for Northamptonshire has an article about the closure of Cottingham Road bridge in Corby for seven months starting January 19th. This is the bridge situated immediately to north (Manton end) of Corby station. the bridge is to be rebuilt to allow for the electrification as units will lay over in the sidings on the Manton side of the bridge.

Controversially, this morning brought news of a further blockade between Kettering and Corby which will mean all trains replaced with buses for a two week period during these bridgeworks. There's been no word from EMT or NR yet but the news emerged after an internal operations document was leaked. There's already been some serious questioning over the need to close Cottingham Rd bridge for so long. A near identical structure, but shorter span, was replaced at Glendon over a six week period. This latest news has come as a major blow given road access to the station will be disrupted as a result of the works.

EMT is not winning any friends at the moment, running shortened train formations, gross overcrowding at peak times and on the back of a major fare increase. I'm off to Bournemouth tomorrow so we;ll see if CrossCountry is any better.

The lack of communication and any explanation as to why two basically similar tasks should have such a variation in the time taken to complete is the key point. The bridge concerned is beyond the track length most Corby trains use but there’s been zero communication on the blockade, which starts in less than a month and adds 50% to London journeys. The bridge works were known, the blockade and bus replacement, which is scheduled for two weeks but has provision for up to six, has yet to be announced. Neither EMT or NR have commented or responded to requests for confirmation.

 

Everyone appreciates there will be disruption but communication to allow travel choices to be made is key. In this instance there has been zero, customers have every right to feel aggrieved.

Thats only appeared since yesterday, journeys on the EMT site at least showed nothing different when we checked yesterday. There's still no mention  on the NR website with the rest of the news on the upgrade or on the EMT travel info' yet, only on the journey planner and buried in the upgrade works news for Feb which shows it as a five day closure, not the two weeks currently planned. Presumably the indication is they expect it can be achieved in that timeframe.

 

Its baffling why there's been no advance notification or why EMT are so reluctant to talk about it. They have announced an information session at Corby next Tuesday, from 2.30 until 6, which misses the morning and evening trains most commuters use. There's no indication in the advance publicity for this of bus replacement, merely that its to update on the bridge works.

Not funny for those unfortunate to be employed, pensioners or subcontractors thereof.

Who knows, it might explain some of the reluctance to talk about the bridge works, which may well now be delayed. Not sure if it was Carillion who were carrying out the reconstruction of the bridge at Corby but the track works were theirs.

According to Network Rail at a customer communication event in Corby last week, the collapse of Carillion will have no impact on the electrification programme, "...this is a Network Rail project and involves a number of contractors who are delivering it. Network Rail can effectively manage these contractors directly to maintain the plan....".

 

Begs the question what exactly were Carillion doing to contribute and earn their substantial share of the cost?

I rode on the “first” train to Corby as a16 year old kid in April 1987, so how did Corby not have a station until 2009?

 

Slack factual presentation! That "station", in reality merely the former down line platform, only lasted from April 13th 1987 until June 2nd 1990 when services were withdrawn. The current station opened for business on Feb 25th 2009 on the site of the original 1897 station which had closed in 1967.

 

Corby's path to rail prosperity has been a tortuous one, having lost passenger services twice in 25 years then suffering the indignity of having a shiny new £8m station open with only one train a day and a rail replacement bus covering the connections to the network for the first few months

I used to travel the route from London to Sheffield as a student back in the late 1980's and have never been back since.

 

Just wanted to ask a couple of questions if somebody has a brief moment.

 

1. Is the route north of Corby also single-track or did it escape rationalisation?

2. Is the section between Bedford and Kettering to be tripled or will the entire section be quadrupled again?

1- Corby north to Manton is double track with a long signal block section which changes after next weekend.

2- Bedford to Kettering is currently 2 fast and 2 slow north to Sharnbrook, 2 fast and bi-directional slow to Kettering south then 2 fast/2 slow to Kettering.

Currently having the 2nd slowline being reinstated between Sharnbrook and Kettering South to be ready for May next year.

I see that the video now refers all this work as part of the Midland Mainline Improvement Programme.

 

MML electrification (apart from the Corby bit) is now well and truly dead.

 

The NR video has a very sixties feel to it; especially from the aspect of the voice-over and script.
