S.A.C Martin
As a postscript to the Fowler 7F 0-8-0, I bought a LNER Class 04 2-8-0 today and its the same wheelbase and appears to be the same chassis as under the S&DJR 2-8-0. This info might be useful to someone contemplating an 0-8-0 and needs a GCR tender after the conversion.... Such as a Thompson Q1 (a project I want to take up myself later in the year).
coachmann
I wonder if we'll see a Q6 from Bachmann in March?

coachmann
I have the Isinglas drawing for the Class 04/7 (Gresley boiler) but decided last night I like this model as it stands even to the shiny finish. A vision in priming sludge and rust might follow one day though... It is a bit late in the day to start modifications when Bachmann might announce an 04 variant this year. Mucky Duck
This is another thread that slipped through my net although it has to be said I haven't been seriously trawling for ages. coachmann
I have bought boxes for my locos at long last. While going through them I decided to slim down the collection and dispose of a few. They can be found on my website. http://larrygoddard.webs.com/alsoforsale.htm

coachmann
Thanks Cypher VII. Must admit I wouldn't have converted the NRM Midland Compound had I known Bachmann were about to launch the LMS version so soon. I think the L&YR 2-4-2T will be the next loco to enter the mods department...

coachmann
I found these pictures on a CD today. I cannot remember if they were taken on film or digital, but they were put onto a CD by our local photography shop so they must be from around 12 years ago. The LMS Fowler 'Austin Seven' is 7mm scale and it was photographed on my good friend Philip Hindleys National Coal Board layout (he is now an RMweb member)....

coachmann
A second Bachmann 'Compound' was added to the stud recently (discounted by Rails for the day) . These locos are a minefield for modellers and so photos of the loco being represented at the period being modelled are most important. I soon discovered that the chosen engines, Nos.40927 or 40935 could not be represented seeing as the former had a Fowler tank on a Deeley long wheelbase chassis and the latter was built during Staniers reign with rivetted construction, plain coupling rods and bevel-rim wheels. Back to research! I finally settled in a picture of Nottingham-based 41196 working out of Leeds in the early 1950s. It had all the requisit fittings bar an exhaust injector. First of all I attached the fittings that came with the model. The fire-iron fitting will sit level with the top of the coal rails, which is too high.... Either drill out the holes in the metal coal weight of shave the plastic fire-iron fitting so that it sits level with the tender top.... This drawing shows the shape of the exhaust injector pipe that sprouts out of the lower smokebox.... Not having suitable brass wire in stock, I shaved down a plastic telegraph pole until it was the right diameter and then carefully bent it as shown. Mekpak was brushed onto the surface to help it retain its shape and distress the surface to represent lagging.... Commencing with a small diameter pilot drill, a hole was drilled into the smokebox 11mm from the rear and 7mm from footplate before the hole was opened out... Similarly, a hole was drilled into 5thou plastikard before it was cut into a rectangle as shown... This was then secured over the hole in the smokebox with Mekpak.... The aforementioned pipe was then glued into the hole with the tail end dissapearing behind the frames... Edited April 26, 2013 by coachmann
coachmann
After fitting 247 Develepments etched fire irons, the weathering merely consisted of spraying matt black the the smokebox, cab roof, tender top and frames... Slaters 'Methfix' Midland Railway wagon numerals were used to make a smokebox number plate with curly 6 and 9 as per 41169, which probably had its plate made from postwar LMS patterns. The 11E shedplate was one of those that dissapeared like the '7' sheds. Bachmann has captured the Compound to a tee. I only need a RTR Fowler 3P 2-6-2T and LYR 3F 0-6-0 now! A point I forgot to mention is I am prepared to live with leading guard irons on the bogie instead of on the mainframes. slatgrille
Coachmann, I am astounded to come upon, after all this time, your work on the Compound. I am rediscovering my interest in R Modelling after an absence of about 30 years. Your impression of 41196 is simply staggering. It is especially so, because it has to be the subject of my portraying a 'favourite' loco. Starting my interest aged eight, guided by my grandad, it was the very first number in my Ian Allan book in 1955/6. I am between Bradford and Skipton, and this loco was one of a number of regular performers on 'The Residential' between Bradford/Leeds and Morecambe. By then a 11E/24J Lancaster Green Ayre based loco having been at Agecroft, we saw it as a frequent visitor. I have to ask, where is your model now? Can I see it? I would dearly love to have the creation of this loco. At present I am re-cutting my teeth by starting on a Hornby based Compound project. It will be imperfect, and if it ever comes to fruition, it will pale by comparison with your creation. Thank you.
