RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted June 1, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 1, 2014 Only just caught on to this thread William. Really nice work and super pics. Like you, I have been amassing IP kits, but it seems that Ivor may not produce any more for 16mm, following the spat with a certain society. I do hope that problem is resolved, although I see he did not go to Peterborough this year? Thanks Mike, from what I've heard & read neither party is willing to back down from their position. Fortunately IP still seem to have kits available, although that could just be stock they've had for a while. In my opinion it would be a considerable blow to the 16mm world if IP do leave the scene, their kits are what got me and undoubtedly others started and at least 3/4 of my rolling stock & locos come from them. Something of an IP cavalcade, an Ezee Daisy railcar with 2 MOD opens, 2 freelance 2 comps and my trusty luggage brake. Despite her size she was capable of hauling that lot! Mike Storey
It would certainly be a blow, but thankfully there seem to be enough new kids on the block to fill most of the gap. Plus, my scratchbuilding skills do need a kick up the proverbial. Will start putting my track down (again) next year, but significant earthworks needed first, due to flooding problems. Aye, I'm constantly impressed with Swift Sixteen's offerings for example. Will start putting my track down (again) next year, but significant earthworks needed first, due to flooding problems. Just like the real railways!
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted June 6, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2014 Poor old No.58 looks like it's been through the wars recently. So far the only external weathering it's received is a watered down brown being painted on then wiped off, but the running gear will get done again, this time with a darker brown. The interior has been sanded down to create the impression of hard use, I've also filed the top edges. The L sections will be improved in time with the addition of cosmetic bolts to make them look like a cheap repair to keep the wagon in action, which is NOT what this is! I'm thinking of doing this to most of my opens now, but the only slight problem is that I've fitted L sections to 2 other wagons already, I could either say that those two wagons are ex-works or build 2 replacement opens. Mike Storey
I have experimented with Costa's and similar stirring sticks to represent planking on the base of such wagons. Easily weathered. You might want to give that a try if you are not yet happy with the appearance. Far more noticeable and much easier and faster to achieve than representing rivets, which tend to get lost in any weathering anyway.
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted June 8, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 8, 2014 Mike, I'm happy with the weathering as it is, the interior might get some more attention but the running gear will definitely get some before the next running day on Sunday the 15th. I have thought about obtaining a load of stirrers to scratch build something, possibly another open although a flat wagon is something I'm missing at the moment. RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted July 7, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2014 The YC&DMES' summer BBQ on July 5th was very enjoyable, the weather was sunny after a cloudy start, the food was good and there were no accidents, you can't really ask for more can you? An inspirational message to us all! While waiting for a gap in traffic to allow me onto the main line I played with the blowdown valve Minnie was in fine form all day, not putting a toe never mind a foot wrong Waiting to reverse into the steaming bay at the end of a very enjoyable day
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted August 20, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 20, 2014 I moved to a different flat in late July so that's effected my output, in fact today saw me doing any sort of work on my collection since mid July, how time flies! Earlier this week I purchased a Roundhouse Dylan dating from the early 80s that hasn't run for at least 10 years. Her pot boiler is fired by meths with a slip eccentric 0-4-0 chassis making her not too different to the much younger Minnie. It was exciting to see the loco come back to life after her long hibernation only needing a thorough oiling, and a bit of patience to get her running again. She is by no means in the condition she was when outshopped at Roundhouse, she's been repainted into what I've been told is Darjeeling blue, fitted with gas firing then converted back to meths, had R/C fitted & removed but retains the rare tender used albeit with a different chassis to the other example I've seen, she's also had draincocks, a water filler valve and new couplings on the front of the loco & rear of the tender fitted, and had her meths tank altered. I've run her the past 2 days, yesterday on a friend's rather hilly railway, that kept me on my toes, chasing the loco to either open the regulator to keep her moving or shutting it to prevent her breaking Mallard's record! Today was on the much more familiar York Model Engineering Society's railway. She's run well both days although she was running much better today due to a combination of running in, my knowledge of the loco improving and a railway I know well until when running her in reverse she decided to shed a crankpin derailing her. Fortunately I've been reliably informed that Roundhouse's current crankpins will fit a loco that's around 30 years old, they could teach many companies a thing or two! Out on a railway for the first time in over a decade, still warm from a test run on blocks Waiting for the section to clear Dylan's safety valve was tested effectively! Stretching her legs on what is the closest she'll have to a home railway for some time L-R; Lubricator, meths filler, pressure gauge, regulator & water filler. The RH buffer is showing the scars of a meths fire at some point in her past. The 'golden spike' moment between Dylan & Minnie, the lower longer Dylan in my opinion is a more powerful looking loco than the Millie, however I'd expect the younger loco to be the more powerful in reality She's needed some minor work doing, mainly tightening screws on the dumb buffers and altering the brackets holding the removable cab rear & cab roof on, although she still needs a new bracket on her roof and a new crankpin once they arrive from Roundhouse. And just to show off here's some more photos of my new acquisition. Her tender is not permantly coupled and while it reminds me of the Penryhn Ladies I think she looks more like a 'typical' narrow guage loco without it. And the coal load will be replaced with real coal in time!
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted September 1, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 1, 2014 Dylan's a whole loco again, she's got a new crankpin, I've reattached her RH name & worksplates, made a new bracket so her cab roof fits properly and tinkered with the other brackets to keep the cab rear tight. Earlier that week I purchased another 2 open wagons from a freind, a part built IP kit and a plastic bodied example of unknown provenance and I managed to get them both finished for Sunday's running day although the lettering on one needs further attention in my opinion. The new wagons are 3rd & 4th from Dylan in this shot Coals to Dringhouses by williamfj2, on Flickr Here she is at the end of the day, after running for a good 4/5 hours over the day, the only incident came when I overfilled the meths tank resulting in the front pot flooding and burning meths spilling out. Dylan by williamfj2, on Flickr This is the result of the slight fire, I only knew there was trouble when smoke started coming from the gap between the saddle tank & the boiler! Mike Storey
Work about to start on the foundations of my new track here in France (32mm) so I hope to post some photos over the winter and get something running on the first length by next summer. Why so long? - digging the soil here is like mining.....

RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted September 14, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2014 Well another running day has come and gone, this time I got ambitious and had both of my steam locos out however I can't see myself repeating that as it's a bit too much work to run both at the same time! First things first here are the two recently acquired & completed open wagons, neither have needed any further attention since completion which is just how things should be. Once Minnie had raised pressure she was used to take my useful tools and a crippled wagon to the steaming bay I normally use. Once Dylan arrived things got silly with me double heading my two locos for a while, once I got the crippled wagon repaired I needed the extra motive power! Then things got sillier when an older Dylan (one of the oldest around and also named Dylan) replaced Minnie as the pilot loco Fortunately some sense of sanity was restored and Dylan (my Dylan that is!) & Minnie took turns with the open rake. The end of the day, Dylan cools down after shunting Minnie about for a bit I think I've got enough footage from the last couple of running days to make a short video showing some of the antics on the garden railway and if I'm feeling cruel I might put it up on here! RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted September 15, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2014 And here is the video, I really thought I'd have more suitable footage from 2 running days but hey ho.
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted October 10, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2014 After receiving the latest copy of the 16mm association's quarterly magazine and reading an article on models of the 'Festiniog castles' (Criccieth, Conway & Harlech) I've been inspired to pick up work on where I left off on the diesel that was under construction earlier this year and it looks like most of my work needs to be scrapped! Some of the drawings have gone missing and the modifications needed to make the loco's appearance 'work' means that the body might as well be started from scratch. RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted November 7, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 7, 2014 I've finally removed 2 wagons from the workshop and are now able to be placed onto the running roster. They're both Swift Sixteen kits, the hopper is allocated to my (under construction) permanent way train whereas the well wagon is more for general work, although I have nothing suitable in the way of loads for it yet. The p way train is a long way from completion with an IP Engineering crane wagon and another Swift Sixteen hopper to finish plus a coach, along with a bogie brake coach to find and build although I do have a number of vehicles that are intended to be part of it when the time comes. Minnie has been fitted with a whistle that produces a rather pleasant note & I've fitted new couplings on Dylan between loco & tender that not only close the gap between them but also make Dylan an easier loco to run without the tender as the original hooks tended to cause buffer lock when reversing a train. I haven't taken many photos of the last two running days that saw Minnie doing the honours during the October running & Dylan running during the bonfire night steamup but I thought this view of Dylan was worthy of recording. Mike Storey
Can you fit a beer or wine glass on that well wagon William? If so, i think I should place a few orders with Swift 16 !
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted November 7, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 7, 2014 I can confirm that a pint glass will fit onto the central bed of the well wagon, although testing it with a full glass would be a challenge as I'd have to keep the glass full, hic! RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted November 16, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 16, 2014 That's another running day done & dusted, with Dylan performing delightfully. It seemed to be quite a testing day on the garden railway with at least 4 locos on test after some receiving amount of attention. I bought a new camera recently and I was playing with it a lot, recorded a fair amount of video footage so there should be another one of those some time this week and there are more photos that I might put up here to boot. Despite not currently having the other hopper wagon, designated coach or crane ready I decided to track something along the lines of a p way train Blue is the colour this season! This very impressive model of the former Sittingbourne & Kemsley articulated Bagnall Monarch was on test after some fettling Here I am stuck in the middle with you... Later on a modified Garratt (a real design that never left the drawing board, sadly) borrowed my rolling stock to give it something to pull, although I doubt she noticed it! And one more for good measure.

RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted November 22, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 22, 2014 Here's the video from Sunday, highlights include a whistling tram, Dylan's leaks and some impressive feats of haulage! And a couple of bonus photos Now that's a real weathering job! I really like the proportions of this tram, should be very good once she's finished. RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted December 5, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2014 The death of my laptop early last week saw me do some modelling once again, however instead of finishing the hopper wagon & p way crane wagon that are already under construction I also started to build another curved top open wagon & a Vale of Rheidol bogie brake coach for my p way train. So now I have 4 vehicles scattered about all of which probably only need an hour or two spent on each one!
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted December 6, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 6, 2014 I shouldn't have been so worried about not doing any more modelling as that's all I've been doing this afternoon! My p way coach has now got the wasp stripes I've been umming & ahhing about more for fear of making a pigs ear of it. This hopefully shows how I did it, 10mm between each stripe and many meters of masking tape were used! Getting there Finished!
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted December 10, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 10, 2014 I've got three of the wagons on the bench finished, including the crane which works, in a manner of speaking. If I was starting again I would solder it as I've had to repair it a few times as joints gave up.
