A Visit to Mollington Street HS

I used to live nearby when I was a student at Liverpool Poly in 1984ish. I'd call in a couple of times a week and there'd be up to half a dozen locos, 25s, 40s, 47/0 or 47/3s on there, also Met Cam DMUs. Took lots of pics similar to those already posted. Think it's been built on now :( Used to enjoy seeing an 03 parked at the side of the road in the docks as well, opposite a seedy looking pub.

I can remember a visit (Depot Bunk) there in the late 1970's. It looked very run down then. Looking on Google maps the land appears to still be derelict, but you can clearly see where the depot was.

40004 on Mollington St, 10th June 1984. The area was very run down by then, but still turning up decent locos.post-18087-0-20828700-1359313637.jpg

03189 on 27th October 1984. very poor photo, but the only time I saw an 03 there, they were usually on Birkenhead North EMU depot or in the docks.post-18087-0-65582000-1359314972.jpg

Never got the chance to go to Mollington Street, wanted to though.

Was the area now occupied by the retail units (Matalan and so on) part of where the railway was?

Any green TOPS Class 25s ever operate from there? Have an old Hornby one was going to renumber and practice weathering. If I can do one with a number that was based there, all the better.

Just discovered this thread - Mollington Street was my 'local' shed, but only started 'visiting' in 1972-ish.

Interesting that previous posters thought that the 'Gaffer' was a cheery soul - I only knocked on the door once to ask if I could look around - '"'Scuse me mister,...." was all I got out before the foreman told me to '*** Off'! Perhaps the early 70s were more brutal....

I couldn't afford much in the way of a camera or film, but I managed to blag the family Instamatic a few times.

This is 1973 at 8H (sorry I have no more accuracy than that :scratchhead: ) ...and please excuse the quality of a 13-year olds efforts, although they're not much better than that now!

It's been a while, but I found just a few more.

47441 and 47028 along with 08110 at Mollington Street in 1974:

Class 24 24026 and a DMU (Class 101?) M51174 in the old GW roads in 1973:

...and on Mollington Street itself, if you stood on tippy-toes and looked over the wall approaching the shed you would (and probably still could today) see the vista that is Birkenhead Central.

Class 503s to the fore, 1973:

As an attempt at a 'then and then' comparison, it's interesting to see what Ben Brooksbank's camera made of the same view in 1956 - it was taken from the (almost) identical spot:

That shot of the 47 looks like it has Class 507/508s in the background. Were they often stored at Mollington Street?

I know what you mean - the yellow front seems to have the swept back shape of the 507/8, but may be an illusion (and had they arrived in '84?).

I stand to be corrected, but I reckon they're more likely to be withdrawn 503's. Many were stored (and scrapped) on the GW side, which fits with this photo. The roofs look weathered enough.

I believe the 507/8 were stored on Mollington Street when they first arrived - the windows look to be correct for a 507/8 and not for a 502/3

Thanks for the info regarding the storing of 507/8 (I never saw them at Mollington St) -  but I'm not convinced that these are those Dave - the gap between the front of the cab and the start of the grey window stripe is short on a 503, long on a 507/8.

The one on that photo looks short to me?
