Last "Early Crest" in the wild?

Recommended Posts

There have been a couple of other topics on here which have dealt with this, at least to some extent:

The last engine I saw with an early crest was 42085, withdrawn in October 1967 and now preserved by the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Here's a picture of it taken at Carnforth shed on September 2 1968 (after the end of BR steam):

Whilst I accept Holyhead Breakwater is, to some people 'in the wild' - in the 'real world' 08010 was operating off Willesden in BR green livery, in September, 1977.

.

It carried one black painted bonnet door at least, which in turn had the BR 'early' crest or cycling ferret on it.

In January 1967 there was a ex LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T in a line of withdrawn locos at Skipton with the old crest. Sadly my photo doesn't show the number.

Possibly 41241 as that was withdrawn at Skipton. 41241 Skipton 30 April 1966

The other one withdrawn from there around that time was 41251

Looking at the pictures that have been posted of 41241 and 41251 and going by their positions, I'd say your photo is of 41251 - close in against a wall on the driver's side, with bushes between the wall and the track.

08010 might have been the last loco on BR main line stock to carry the pre-57 crest, but it wasn't an original one. As D3017, this loco was in green, with post-57 emblems on the toolboxes. In late 1973, D3052, which was black with pre-57 emblems, was withdrawn. One bonnet door was nicked from D3052 and put onto D3017, which was being renumbered to 08010 at the time.

The last two locos in service (forgetting about the 01s), with their ORIGINAL pre-57 emblems, were Kingmoor's black 08105 and Crewe's green 08221. 08105, is the only (01s aside) known BLACK/TOPS engine. Both these locos were repainted blue, during 1975, with '105 being the last to go. Another 08 in green, with pre-56 emblems, was Toton's 08181 - but this was repainted blue, early in 1975 - so it was AMONG the last, but not THE last.

I've done a fair bit of research into this subject and I can't find hard evidence of any other 08s to keep their early emblems into the TOPS era; Kingmoor's D3173 (08107) & Stratford's D3248 (08180) had them early in 1974, but I believe both engines were repainted, upon renumbering. So if anyone has any photos of 08105, 181 or 221, or any NEW ones...........
