37408 from blue to red...

Recommended Posts

There are photos of 37408 on the net which show the engine in large logo /more yellow and the most recent date seems to be circa mid 1990s. Similarly there are photos of the engine in EWS when running in south Wales.

When did the livery change from blue to red?

thank you, Graham

Subsequent posts indicate that the engine retained Blue as the main colour until an overhaul at the end of 1998 - thereafter the engine was painted in EWS red. A photograph (referenced here ) shows that the engine had lost the Eastfield Westie logo by summer 1997. When was the dog emblem removed?

It was indeed 1998 and caused a bit of a scandal at the time as EWS planned on renaming it "RAIL magazine" when it came out in the new colours... Cranks were "outraged" and in the end, 417 became RAIL Magazine instead, 408 keeping its Scottish name until the end.

Thank you guys.... so 37408 retained a blue livery until "circa end 1998" when colour changed to red at an overhaul.

Richard Carr has sent a link to a picture of 37408 circa summer 1997, http://www.flickr.com/photos/44483738@N05/5271985705/ .

When did the engine lose the West Highland Terrier emblem?

regards, Graham

Hi

Going of subject a little

37408 was transferred from Eastfield to Canton on the 22/07/89, sometime shortly after it revived a repaint into LL blue but without the Eastfield “customizationâ€.

One night while been stabled at Machynlleth, mysteriously, the Scottie dogs and blacked out head code plates re appeared on the loco. Very strange.

I do not think that you are going off-topic for the original post was about the livery of this re-furbished engine.

So the engine was in LL-MY when transferred to CDF in 1989, then that livery was renewed without the Eastfield emblem... only for some keen person or persons to re-instate the Westie and possibly un-officially.

Rather like a scene from Alice Through the Looking Glass - Curiouser and Curiouser.

thank you, Graham
